Its not incredably new, but its a big deal here. THe police are getting cameras on the patrol cars that automatically pick up, detect and and run the license plate numbers. The red light cams which are no longer being used to give red light tickets here (because of the lack of reliability, the cameras were being watched and tickets issued by a contracted third party) are now being equipped with the same tech to scan plates and look for stolen cars
The traffic cams on the interestate are able to detect a fire and stopped traffic (although I think that is combined with sensors on the road as well.
Truthfully anything and everything can be rcognized by camera, the question is how much of the tech the gov and space program release to the public and when
Source(s): Technology is also being developed and experiemented with to use cameras connected to lead or electrodes in the brain to help blind people see, or 'detect' what they are 'looking' at more the way a sighted preson would see things - George YLv 71 decade ago
I'd love to see a camera whose eyepiece could detect which part of the scene the photographer's eye is focused on, and then would focus the camera on the same area.
Not every photo is a photo of a face. Imagine a scene with the a child handing mom a single rose for Mother's Day. Perhaps the rose should be in focus and the faces made secondary in the photographer's imagination? A face-detecting camera would do the opposite and ruin the compostion.

I don't know if they are still offering this on any of their cameras, but I think Canon was exploring the eye motion detection thing a few years ago. Maybe they still do this and maybe they abandoned the technology.
I would like cameras to detect sweaty palms of people who are too nervous to be shooting a wedding.

*** detection. It would detect when a horse's patoot was behind the camera, and shut down completely, forcing them to come on YA and ask why their camera doesn't work.

Chest dimensions. If they are not of the proper size then the camera suggests automatically that you move to the next subject.

auto acne spot selecters.
after the photo is taken, the camera automatically highlights the acne so when you edit it, it'll take seconds to edit.
that would cut my acne editing in photoshop down to like 2 seconds a picture instead of 2 minutes =]

IQ, have it keep people with an IQ of below 100 out of schools. the teachers would never get in. it could just use face detection technology to identify the person and check their IQ.
