how can i keep my kids locked in their room during the night? they get up & get into everything while i sleep?
okay, here's the deal.. i have a 1 & 2 year old that share a room, and they wait until i go to sleep at night and get out and meddle in everything in the house, so i awake with them at 6am, to find the house trased, EVERY morning! what can i do? there door opens inward so i dont know what kind of lock i can put on the outside of it to keep them from opening the door! the little balls that you put over the door handles doesnt work, bc they have already figured out how to get past them,
any one have any suggestions? i cant stay up all night and wait for them to come out
serious answers only, im not being cruel, im just trying to prevent them from getting into something that could hurt them while im sleeping at night
im really not trying to be mean to my kids or cruel in any form or fashion, as i do love my children more than anything in the entire world, however i have tried the baby gates, and between the 2 of them, they have figured out how to knock them down.
also, they are not in cribs, because they have both learned how to climb out of cribs, and there is a greater chance of them hurting themselves climbing over their cribs!

Use a baby gate on their bedroom door or get a bed alarm that goes off if they get out of bed.

Well, if they're that young, I think you should probably still have them sleeping in cribs.
You CAN put an outside lock on the door, but I don't recommend doing that. It could be construed as abuse especially if something happened. For example, if there was a fire and you couldn't make it to the room...legally, you could be held responsible for some parts of it. Besides, it's not very safe to have someone locked in their room at night, because of burglars and the like. It would be hard for them to escape.
I recommend putting them back in cribs and locking the bar that holds the crib door up. That's perfectly safe and if there is a fire or something else, it's easy to get into their room and get them. You could also just put a baby gate in their door way, too.

you can get a baby gate to put on the outside of the door, or even two gates stacked on top of each other will keep them from getting out and you can still tear them down quickly if you needed to. I wouldn't suggest a lock with a key because it's dangerous in an emergency but you could get a hook and eye or slide latch (the kind on public bathrooms) and put it out of reach.
Just make sure you are only using this because your kids truly need it; once they are old enough to learn they need to stay in bed, you have to take this stuff down and just deal with it.
if you want a less confining method, you can get "wanderguards" which are bracelets that alert you when they've left a certain area (like their bedroom)

Maybe they can stay in the same room as you. They might want to be right next to you. That is so sad that they walk around the house alone. I know that you need your beauty sleep, but locking them in their room is probably scary for them.Sometimes let them sleep in the same bed with you. Sorry I am just having a hard time with this question. I couldn't lock my baby in a room. Is the rest of your house baby proof? You can have gates put up in certain areas you don't want them to get into. I'm probably not really giving any good advice. :)

I wouldn't lock them in their room, but put up a baby gate. There are baby gates that stand up to 44 inches tall if them climbing is an issue. Use a baby gate.
I would also venture to ask why your one year old is not in a crib anyhow??
I would put both in cribs and tell them until they can stay in their big kid beds they will be sleeping in the crib.

I thought about doing this with my kids when they were younger (now the're 4 and 3), but ended up not doing it. My biggest fear was what if a fire started and they were trapped. My husband and I just put up baby gates into all the important rooms where they could make a mess (kitchen, bathrooms and master bedroom. We didin't buy the plastic ones that expand--we bought wooden gates on hinges (they're made for stairs) because they're harder to open. We also sleep with our bedroom door open, so we can hear them if they get up. Thankfully now that they're a little older, they pretty much stay in bed, but I've gotten up occasionally to find them trying to get into the kitchen. :) If you don't want to go to all that trouble, put up a gate into their bedroom door and leave their door open. That way, if they wake up crying/scared, etc. you can still hear them, but they won't be able to get out and wreak havoc!

You can but a baby gate that is about 3 ft tall with the poles going in and upward motion so they cant climb the gate. The gate also had a door that will swing open either way and can be latched closed. I used one of these for my son and it was perfect. You can buy they at babis r us.

Try a baby gate on the outside of the door so even if they open their door they cant leave their room. Locking the door isnt safe in case of an emergency. Hope you can find something that works.

You should never put a lock on your children's door on the outside. That could be dangerous as the house could catch on fire and they could not escape. You should get a gate for the doorway. Hopefully, they won't be able to figure out how to get past the gate.

Your kids have too much energy. Try playing with them alot before bedtime or extend their bedtime( make them stay up longer) They will sleep longer. Or tey getting up earlier yourself so momma gets up when they do. But locking your kids in a room can be a bad thing! Say a fire happens they cant get out and you may not be able to reach them. Not to mention Social Services WILL take your kids if they were to find out.Or try one of those child safety buttons that beeps as soon as the door opens to let you know they are trying to sneak out.Good luck but I say make them as sleepy as you can before laying them down at night and use the safety button.

There is a door/window alarm that you can buy at like walmart or home depot. One side sticks to the door, the other to the wall and when the two separate a loud alarm sounds. and yes it has an on off switch so you can turn it off during the day. This will keep them in their room at least.
