Vernon Gholston?

About this time of year there is always one player who has a freak showing at the combine and draws comparisons to Mike Mamula as a "workout warrior". Gholston wasn't very consistent in college, some games he was outrageous and made plays all over the field, and others he got lost among the crowd. What kind of impact do you think he will have for the team that picks him, and do you think he should be rated as a top five pick?

His inconcictency in college wasn't all him..your performance is also affected by the guys you line up with, and sometimes, how well you match up with the other guy.

You know me. I DON"T like OSU. But the guy dropped 15 sacks on people last year. That speaks for itself. He was far and away the best defender, regardless of what the Lauranitis lovers want to think.

He might not be as high motor a guy as Chris Long...or, he may have just taken time to come into his own.

His Impact will be directly proportional to how they use him, and who drafts him. Remember "SuperFreak"? Titans used him to amazing effect. Eagles spend big money on him, he didn't really match their style of Defensive philosophy...and suddenly he was a non-factor.

Gholston needs to be with a team that has the kind of ATTACK philosophy that Spagnoulo has institued with the Giants. As for where he goes, with our new D-Doordinator, and the emphasis on the D-Line, and Marvin Lewis prefferance for an aggresive Defense (look to his Ravens days), I would love to get the guy.

I doubt highly he will last to #9, but I have long felt that Marvin should wrap our #9 pick in with one of our supplemental thirds, and find a suitor for a draft trade in spots 3-5. One of them would be happy to move down to target their player for a smaller payday.

And in slots 3-5, we would be guaranteed to either land Gholston, or as a "consolation" prize, Dorsey or Eliis.

then, in Round 2, hopefully Trevor Laws will still be on the board (or, If our GM gets creative, we swap 2nds in the trade for the first round also) and we finish building our starting D-line. Add in the return of Thurman and Brooks (and maybe Pollack) to our D, and our emerging secondary, and you would see a very different Bengals D on the field.

I think he WILL have major impact, (unless the Raiders get him...the Black Hole seems to ruin everyone these days), and yes, I think he is a top 5 pick.

    My top 5:

    1)Chris Long

    2)Jake Long

    3)Glenn Dorsey

    4)Vernon Gholston

    5)Sedrick Eliis

There is quite simply NO "skill" players worth a top 5 pick. And in a rational world, you would not see anyone target McFadden or Ryan until AFTER the top 10 at least... McFadden is wway overhyped...and Ryan is getting overvalued because of the dearth of QBs this year (actually a deeper class than last year...but the top 2, Brohm and Ryan, are not as good as Russell and Quinn)

You comment that csome games he seemed to get lost in the crowd... Please, my friend... name me ONE player that is not true of. Nobody gets a sack in every game of their career. Even AJ Hawk, who is simply amazing, will have 14 tackles one week, and then sometimes 3 the next. That's just the X's and O's.

*Edit..to the person above...actually, Gholston beat Long exactly ONCE...which was the ONLY sack Jake Long gave up his Senior season. Both are amazing players.

Source(s): I live in Columbus O-H-I-O. Even though I'm not a fan (Go Irish!), I watch EVERY GAME, and will probably be at the Scarlet and Grey game. I like to be informed as to what is going on.

I think he is one of the best prospects in the draft, and in the last two games of the season he had 6 sacks. One of those games he was against Jake long. Here are the top 5 prospects.

    (1) Chris Long, a raw football player and the safest pick in the draft that proved him self on the felid as well as at the combine.

    (2) Vernon Gholston, peaked the last to games of the season and carried the performance to the post season.

    (3) Glenn Dorsey, won every award there is to win for a DT he proved his injurys where not a problem at his pro day.

    (4) Jake Long, only allowed 1 sack (against Vernon Gholston) and is a great athileate

    (5) Darren Mcfadden, a good running back who with the right coaching he could be one of the leages leading rushers.

After posting an incredible 40 time at Indianapolis, most people expected Vernon Gholston to rest on his laurels. That wasn't the case at Ohio State's Pro Day. Gholston actually improved his 40, notching a 4.58. He also had a 42-inch vertical. There is no doubt in mind that if Chris Long is off the board, the Rams will take Gholston with the second-overall selection.

I'm glad I predicted Gholston to go second in my 2008 NFL Mock Draft prior to the combine. Gholston was every bit as good as Chris Long, running a 4.64, benching 225 pounds 37 times, jumping 35.5 inches off the ground. He also had a broad jump of 10'5", which is much better than Gaines Adams' sub-10. There's no doubt in my mind that unless Chris Long is on the board, the Rams are going with Gholston. It just makes too much sense at this point.

Gholston had a great game against Michigan, beating Jake Long on more than one instance.

Vernon Gholston essentially came out of nowhere to record 8.5 sacks in 2006. How will he fare now that offensive coordinators will be focusing on him? Remember, Quinn Pitcock, David Patterson and Jay Richardson all left for the NFL.

  • Many teams are comparing Gholston to Demarcus Ware; a college end that fits best as a 3-4 outside linebacker. To answer part of your question, I heard many NFL scouts don't believe Gholston will last past pick number 6, the Jets.

He absolutely is a work out warrior and he will tell you that himself. The guy lives in the gym, but his work ethic and drive will keep him from being a bust. He is a top 10 pick to me, but not as a defensive end where he can get lost in the crowd as you mentioned. I have him going to the Patriots as an outside linebacker where he can use his quickness and power to manipulate TE's and RB's instead of trying to stand up O-Linemen. He is a stronger Quentin Groves.

he is a perfect for any team that plays the 3-4 and is looking for those tweener that arent quite a LB or an End. He would be perfect for a team like st louis who is trying to switch to a 3-4 permanently or someon like the jets or Patriots.
