Do the veterans at VA hospitals like visitors?

I belong to Soldier's angels and was going to visit a VA hospital where I live and take them in cookies. Would they allow them to have them and would the soldiers appreciate visits from a stranger? I worked in the medical area for over 20 years and know alot of them are probably pretty sick and wondered if this would be appropriate. We were actually asked to visit them and maybe take a lap quilt we'd made. Any answers appreciated.

Update:

Thank you all for your kindness. There really isn't alot of love in this world anymore is there?

I think that as a general rule, they would LOVE a visitor. Someone that they could just talk to and break the routine and/or monotony that goes with being laid up in the hospital. They gave up a lot and put themselves in harms way, and didn't ask for anything in return. I think it's great that people are willing to take the time to brighten their day. God bless you, you're a kind spirit.

My mom works in Oncology at the VA. When I was younger I went to take your daughter to work day every year, and I would sometimes walk to her office after school. Her patients LOVED me. They would all tell me stories of their service. I loved talking to them too. The ones that were around for longer would even ask about me if I didn't stop by in awhile. They would bring my mom things to show me at their next appointment, like pictures, news articles, etc. I found that a lot of people (not just vets) dont have people to talk to, and sometimes it's nice to talk to someone new. Plus, being in the hospital is no fun. These people were there for Chemo treatments when I saw them, and they rarely had friends/family with for their treatments. I dont think visitors were allowed in the Chemo room- but I was. :)

You should definately do it. It's such a fond memory of mine, and I hope for them too. Those visits really prompted my interest in volunteering w/ vet organizations.

My Dad has spent many many night's in a VA Hospital and take it from me they really would appreciate you. I would visit my dad when he was there and I met some of the sweetest veterans. There are a lot of them who are lonely and don't have family but they really love to chat. I think what you are doing is a wonderful thing. I appreciate you too and I know they would.

They absolutely would love visitors. And they would enjoy any time you have to sit and visit with them. Even if you can play cards or a board game with them. I know many of my older patients who were in the military will talk about their time in the service. They also enjoy telling their life stories! Go and have a wonderful time! What a great organization to be a part of!

You may run in to a very VERY small percentage of folks that would not like it. I am sure the folks at the VA would point them out as to not make them angry. But any message and good deed from the heart would be welcome by the vast majority. You got a good soul kiddo! Bless you!

(my source is not for this message, but for troops serving overseas)

    Cheers!

Undoubtedly individuals vary; but in general they appreciate visitors. It would be advisable to arrange any such events with the hospital, though; they know the patients' needs and situation and can provide guidance.

they would enjoy having people to talk to and let the vet. know what is going on out side who know you might meet the person that you kiss

I agree, it would be nice and make them feel appreciated for their service to our country. Also gives them something else to focus on besides being in the hospital.

Call them and ask about volunteering. They always need volunteers.
