Should Children Be Allowed to Pray In Public School?

Should they get in trouble if they do?

I don't believe in group prayer in public schools but if a kid wants to pray, we should let them. The atheist/person of another religion doesn't have to listen.

Update:

Not forced prayer.

I think we should all be accorded our constitutional right of freedom of speech, no matter where it is.

funny thing is that it is the ones that holler the loudest about prayer in the school, are the one that also holler the loudest about freedom of speech.

I'm in the middle like you. The constitution provides for freedom of religion and freedom from state endorsed religion. If the individual wants to pray that isn't disruptive that is fine. Even if a small group wants to meet on their own time on school property, before class, during lunch, etc, and the meeting isn't a disruption to school activities, then they have that right. But the school should not publicly lead school prayer.

But I would like to see comparative religion taught in school. Not a semester long , just a week or so long study in sociology comparing Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, etc. A general study of major religions with large followings as it is a sociological issue.

I think freedom of religion is a part of constitution that has been forgotten. It should not be required that the entire class pray to the same god, if they want to have the prayer is school, they should call it something else...such as meditative time and let believers of so many deities and non-believers do as they wish.

Yes children should be allowed to pray in schools. As a matter of fact, it's funny how the schools will allow some students to wear clothing tied to their religion (muslim), which is a form of paying tribute to one's religion just as prayer is.

Funny how schools won't let students pray during the school week, but they'll rent the schools out on Sundays to certain churches to hold services in the schools. Go figure this one out.

It's not ironic that when we (the government) forced God/Christ out of school, the guns flowed in.

I think any kid should pray whenever they want. I encourage my daughter to pray and I don't care where either. No one should judge anyone if they want to pray. It's obvious we live in messed up world that sadly many people don't believe that Jesus created them.

But no one should force anyone to do something they don't want to. That would be up to that person and God

They can always pray in their heart God still hears them, so anybody can pray anywhere they want to just let your prayer come from the compassion of your heart.

Any Christian knows it's more important to serve God, so yes, prayer should be allowed in school. Others don't like it, then don't listen to it and ignore it.

yes, i think that every person child and adult should have the right to pray in a public place, as long as they are not forcing it on others, it shouldn't be a problem.

You should be able to pray wherever you want. However, I don't think it's necessary to make a big show of it. If a kid wants to bow his head and close his eyes for a minute and say a silent prayer, that's fine. But if he were to get down on his knees in front of everybody and say a prayer out loud for everyone to hear, that's not fair. Not only is it not fair, but the person who does that is doing it for the wrong reason. He's not praying to talk to God. He's just trying to draw attention to himself. I hate people who do that.

I agree that children should be allowed to pray in school but I also agree that children who have no or different religions contrary to christian should not be forced to listen.
