Aerosmith is one band, therefore you should use the singular, "is." Aerosmith IS a band.
I've read the some of the other answers about it depending on the name of the band (for example: Rolling Stones are a band). This is incorrect. The Rolling Stones is ONE band, even though Stones ends in S. Therefore, The Rolling Stones IS a band, and they are one band and the word IS is used because they are a "singular" band. They are not two bands. If they were, THEN you would use the word ARE. Hope this helps.

Either way can work, depending on the structure and consistency of the sentence. You could say "U2 is working on a new album" or "U2 are working on a new album" and both would be correct. It usually doesn't matter whether you're referring to a band as a singular entity or a group of people, depending on the context. Just be sure to keep it singular or plural throughout given sentences.

Strictly speaking "Aerosmith is a band". But in recent decades many people have taken to thinking about the fact that a band, football team, etc has several members, and thus they write "Aerosmith are playing in my town next week" and "Manchester United have lost to Real Madrid" and so on.

if you are talking about the band itself it is "it" and "is" but if you are talking about the group of people in the band it is "they" or "are"

It depends on the name of the band.
If it was something like The Pixies, it would be plural
'The Pixes are my favorite band'
If it's Metallica then it would be 'Metallica is my favorite band.'
