In Kenya, if most Kenyans speak English?

What about the rural areas in Kenya? Do they also speak English, swahili and their tribal language? Or is in just in Nairobi where the english is spoken. Do Kenyans learn the English in school? and what of the rural children/adults who do not/cannot attend school?? they speak english?

English is spoken everywhere in Kenya. Kenyan students start to learn English when they are 8-10 years old in primary school. However, obviously if you don't go to school, then they don't learn English. In rural areas I would estimate that about 75% of people speak English, in Nairobi and other big cities almost everybody does. However, in personal interactions, Swahili is generally used, even if both people know English.

Sometimes, in a very rural and remote area you will meet somebody who doesn't speak Swahili or English, only a tribal language. but I would say 95% of people or more speak Swahili

  • English and Swahili are the country's first languages. (I still don't understand why they make Kenyans take TOEFL....well that's a topic for another day).

In Nairobi, communication (both oral and written) is pretty much in English and Swahili, the rural areas speak swahili but primarily their tribal language.

English and Swahili are both taught at school starting from Kindergarten..but also way before people send their kids to school.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!!

English is spoken mainly in Nairobi, Mombassa and Nakuru. I was born in kenya and lived there for 7 years and in school they learn in English in the majority of schools in Kenya.

In Rural areas they usually speak their tribal language, mine is Kikamba which is a smaller tribe. The biggest tribe in Kenya are the Kikuyu's and they are found around Nairobi.

Children who do not attend schools will usually stick to their mother tongue but they will pick up English from other people.

Almost every person in Kenya can understand English though only less than 80% of the population can actually speak it. In major towns, almost everyone can understand and speak English. The language is becoming more popular by the day and children are not necessarily learning it in school to understand it. Those who come from well-off backgrounds can still speak it even before their first date with a school. Those from the rural areas are much more disadvantaged as they can only learn it in school and practice it in school too. That would mean their skills in the language will remain a step behind those who can learn it in school and still use it for communication even in their own homes. Generally, English is spoken by almost everyone if need be though Swahili is the language of the day in all major towns in the country

maximum folk in Kisumu and different cities know English, yet communicate Swahili usually. For the country as an entire, i might say ninety 5% communicate Swahili, 70% communicate English and in all probability approximately 5% communicate neither. those are in basic terms my estimations, no longer incredibly numbers
