hairball cat question?

My cat started puking tonight. It is brown and liquidy, some undigested hair and food in it. Lots of caughing also. He is ohterwise fine. My question is, how long should i keep food from him before offering it again? I think he has a harmless hairball. He shows no signs of worms and is usually not a puker. We put him in the bathroom where his water is to minimize the mess for now.

Update:

He is also not old. He's just under two years. No sign of kidney issues either. I know what to look for because i have lost a cat from kidney problems. He is on a good quality food that he's been eating for a long time and has no issues with it.

Update 2:

Thanks everyone. We let him out of the bathroom as soon as he stopped puking. His food dish is filled every night before we go to bed, wich we'll do as nomal. I'm going to try the petrolium jelley idea and see if it helps.

Also some of you can be jerkes. Would you put down a child because they puked? This cat is ONLY two years old with a lot of life left. In essance he's a teenager! I'm also going to try getting him some cat grass to help. I feel better now.

I panicked a little as i had a cat die 14 months ago with the poisoned cat food epidemic.

Hairballs are normal, so don't worry. Feed and water as usual. Also, spread a little petroleum jelly on the tops of his front paws. He will automatically lick it off, and it helps deter hairballs.

"If your cat is not a petroleum jelly connoisseur, the traditional method of administering it is to smear a glob of it on a front paw. But be careful! A chunk of goop on a paw is liable to be flipped off in one quick and very efficient motion. My first apartment probably still has Vaseline on the ceiling! It's better to spread it on the leg below the elbow, or any place it's easy for your cat to lick off. You can also put a dab into a syringe and force-feed it to your cat, but if it comes to this, you're probably better off with a more kitty-friendly method of treatment."

Well, we have 2 cats, & tons of experience with hairballs. The dry food bowls are always kept with food in them (i.e. they dont have set feeding times, they kind of just eat when they're hungry) & so they dont have much of an appetite when they have a hairball & its kind of up to them when they feel like eating. I'm not sure what you do about the food at your house but thats what we do =]

Our cats even sometimes puke without a hairball, although this is very rare.

    heres what happened

the cat has hair in his throat and this hair is tickling its throat so the cat is getting bothered so, the cat at first coughs trying to get this hair out. When this doesnt work he eventually ends up throwing up. Buy a type of cat food that prevents this. read each label and make sure it tells you that it helps the hairball situation. Oh and brush your cat to so he doesnt have any hair to go in.

    Hope i helped

I give my cat a little of butter every time I am having toast/butter at breakfast, mostly daily and it has helped a lot with his hairball issues...

Just put a little on your finger and he will lick it.

I give my cat a small amount of food like six times a day just because he can't eat a lot at a time!! I am a "slave" to my siamese! If he eats a lot he throws up!!

cats do that all the time, clean it up and brush his fur regular to keep hair loss to minimum.

You could try dry cat food that has hairball control system in too.

Let him out the bathroom he will drink the loo water haha

My cat throws up all the time and so does my ex's cat.

We used to worry but honestly? The worst part is cleaning it up. I just tell them " you darn cat NOT THERE!!"

Try to keep the cat brushed regularly to cut down on this and also let them eat grass. Grass is good for their digestive system and aids in this process.

I been cleaning it up left and right lately...

it really doesn't matter. i wouldn't withhold food at all, or put him in the bathroom unless he's puking constantly. This is a change of seasons, and cats shed like crazy!! the best thing to do is just buy some hairball remedy (it's only like 3 dollars and my cats love it so i tell them it's a 'treat') and prevent puking. if he's going to puke, it won't matter how long you withhold food in answer to your question.

    good luck.

it is best to just give the cat just the necessary amount of food, and go and see a vet, the vet should give advice on the matter for free, and would only suggest you take the cat in if there is a possibility of a serious matter.

if not, there is bound to be some sites on the internet about cat health.
