Why do atheists assume that they alone are “rational”?

I noticed that atheists on R&S keep using that word as though they have a monopoly on thought & reason, and everyone who disagrees with them is either stupid, dishonest, or high.

Think about it. What makes an atheist somehow immune to the same laws of human nature and psychology that govern the thoughts of every other human on Earth? If the 99 percent of the human race, who are religious, are not “rational”, then how can the atheist be one of the few people who are “rational”, if the rest of the human race are not? Are atheists some other species? Or are they just living in their own type of bias and self denial, the same as everyone else on Earth?

You're not making any sense, ironically.

As a matter of fact, I am better at reasoning than roughly 99 percent of people. You seem to think that it's not possible for anyone to be better at something than 99 percent of everyone. That makes no sense: in fact it's definitely true that 1 percent of people are better at any given thing than the other 99 percent of people. Why is it so hard for you to accept that fact? Poor reasoning skills?

Questions like this keep the war raging in here. This section is full of questions with its sole intent to make the other point of view invalid. I think we should be answering more concerns and true questions than try to prove the other side wrong. There is no turning some of these people. They are set in their minds that they are the only ones who are right. No matter what we say or do, we can't convince them of the truth. You can't sway them this way, so why try?

The more you try to disprove their beliefs the more they try to disprove ours. I try to ignore as much as possible the rants and rages of the atheists who are so intent to prove that God doesn't exist. I know sometimes it's hard not to speak out, but do you really think you are accomplishing anything?

I actually don't see the word rational used that often here, but the way I see it is the religious are often very rational about most things, but somehow are able to compartmentalize their faith in to a zone that doesn't require rational thought or critical thinking. I don't think faith or a belief in god is a rational thought and I can't see how anyone can disagree. There is no rational reason to believe in god.

Your a million) and 2) are solid representations, different than that non-public journey isn't data so the Christians do not probable have any data in any respect. purely faith. I appreciate those Christians who're courageous sufficient to confess this. it is not significant how plenty good judgment and reason one makes use of in his daily existence, if one is believing something exists devoid of data then that perception is baseless and an irrational one.

But there are now more Muslims than Catholics. Does that make Islam "rational" and Catholicism "irrational" because more people believe in one than the other?

"Majority rule" does not enter into religious debate.

I do not feel we have a monopoly on rationality, but I do think I am more rational than people who believe in things that are not there.

People in general do this--take the position that they are rational and that any who disagree are not. Its ad hominum attack and should be ignored in serious debate.

    Generalizing, much?

I do not belittle someone's personal belief system. If "X" is what you believe in, fine. Just do not try to force me into believing it too.

Why do *SOME* atheists assume that they alone are “rational”

Your question is an assumption within itself.

It's never rational to believe in something that has no evidence.
