No. She should return it. If she does not, you can sue her for it in small claims court. A ring is given based on a promise of marriage. If there is no basis for a marriage, then the ring should be returned.

Usually depends on the state but an engagement ring is a promissory gift based on condition of marriage. If the marriage is called off, whoever bought the ring should get it back due to the promise on which the gift was given got broken.

either trust on behalf of the guy to feel that, even if she won't say where she was, then she wasn't doing it to hurt him

or trust on behalf of the girl to feel that he would understand if she told him where she'd been and he wouldn't freak out on her
