Christianity vs. Atheists?

I was wondering if there was a study done regarding the suicide rate of Christians compared with Atheists?

The fact suicide is so highly correlated with latitude might make such a study difficult. Even if a relation were found what would it mean? In the 1930s Jews in Nazi Germany had a very high rate of suicide, while Jews else where did not. Persecuted minorities often have high suicide rates. I just don't see what such a study would accomplish. Further some religions regard suicide as a sin so suicides are often interpreted as accidents. I just think any such study is bound to be worthless before it even begins.

Yes, they have been done since Durkheim with the same results. Since that is where most of the English speaking scientific press is we get mostly Christian countries.

Countries with higher religiosity have lower suicides (much lower for certain religions). For example the WHO says, "In Muslim countries (e.g. Kuwait),... the total suicide rate is close to zero (0.1 per 100,000 population). In Hindu...and Christian countries...around 10 per 100,000 (Hindu:9.6; Christian: 11.2). In Buddhist countries (e.g. Japan) the total suicide rate is distinctly higher at 17.9 per 100,000 population At 25.6, the total suicide rate is markedly highest in Atheist countries..."

Also on a more local level, communities with higher religiosity have less suicides.

Additionally, individuals that are the most religious within a religion have less suicides.

Googled it and this is what I found:

RESULTS: Religiously unaffiliated subjects had significantly more lifetime suicide attempts and more first-degree relatives who committed suicide than subjects who endorsed a religious affiliation. Unaffiliated subjects were younger, less often married, less often had children, and had less contact with family members. Furthermore, subjects with no religious affiliation perceived fewer reasons for living, particularly fewer moral objections to suicide. In terms of clinical characteristics, religiously unaffiliated subjects had more lifetime impulsivity, aggression, and past substance use disorder. No differences in the level of subjective and objective depression, hopelessness, or stressful life events were found.

I don't know. But I'm guessing it is hard to get religious info from a corpse.

I'm not sure what it would mean. A lot of people would identify as Protestant of Catholic that don't actually practice their faith.
