Can I seed my lawn in the spring?

My husband and I moved to our new home in June 2006. The front yard was sodded but the back yard was left for us to get going. They took all the top soil, so what was left has alot of rocks and the soil has alot of clay.

Last fall, we had a landscaper come out and aerate and seed the yard. It made it look alot better but their are still patches that need to be done. I hate thinking we'll spend another summer with the yard looking horrible. Can we seed now or would be just be wasting our time?

    Great question! Complex answer..

Yes, of course you can seed and should get it down soon. Depending on your region, etc. a tall fescue blend will get moving quickly and require less water over the summer, and will have fewer disease issues. Any Bluegrass blend will work too...if you live in zone 6 or cooler(3-6).

The downside of spring seeding is that you can't put down a pre-emergent to hold back crabgrass. You will also have other weeds that you will need to deal with for a while. By this summer you can put down some Scotts Plus 2 to fertilize and kill off any broadleaf weeds. There are post-emergent crabgrass killers available, but I would hold off because your new grass will still be tender. Use Scotts Plus Halts next Spring and enjoy an amazing yard. Good Luck!

If the top soil is gone you need to buy peat moss. If you could till it in 4 inches it would be the best. But with rocks it would be a little hard to till. I think I would just throw out more peat moss and maybe a little sand. Then plant the grass. It's still a good time to plant the grass. But don't put it off because summer is to hot.

As long as the temp is above 32, now is the time to seed.
