PS3 question?

I am going to buy a ps3. I would like to know the different models. I also have a huge ps2 library so backward compatibility is a must. Also please suggest only models which are inproduction and not the ones which sony has discontinued to make.Thanx

Don't listen to Frederick, no offence, but he has no idea what he is talking about

The 60GB PS3 is not the only PS3 with backwards compatibility, but it is the only PS3 with hardware emulation of PS2 games (using the Emotion Engine processing chip used in the PS2), but the 80GB PS3 also is backwards compatibility, the only difference between the 60GB and the 80GB (excluding capacity) is that the 80GB has software emulation of PS2 games, meaning it's not 100% compatible with a PS2 games, technically, any PS2 game you insert into the 80GB PS3 will read, but some games will glitch up, causing problems with the graphics, causing problems with saving, or worse, freezing (just the game, not the PS3 itself)

I think both are discontinued, but there is a higher chance that you will find the 80GB on store shelves, but I heard that the 80GB PS3 is coming back, so you may want to hold out a bit (if you can't find it)

As for compatiblity of games, referr to this site http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleSt...

as for what PS3 has what (as far as I know)

20GB-Barely very much, no card reader, no PS2 compatibility (PS1 and PS3 games only), 2 USB ports (black trim)

40GB-Same as 20GB, except has a 40GB hard drive (chrome trim)

60GB-Everything you would ever want in a PS3 and more, full backwards comapatibility (Emotion Engine), Memory card slots, and 4 USB ports

80GB-Despite the bigger capacity hard drive, I would consider it as the poor man's 60GB, it has the same features as the 60GB, except for the fact that it uses software emulation to play PS2 games, meaning it uses the cell processor as if it were the Emotion Engine, leading to some glitches, making it known as no being 100% compatible with PS2 titles, it includes 4 USB ports and memory card slots

120GB-This was thrown out to include the new dualshock 3 controllers (why they couldn't throw it into the 80GB model is above me), and some stupid game (forgot which one), and to have it appeal to more people because of a lower price (I think), only supports PS1 and PS3 games (no PS2 support), it may have memory card slots but I am not sure

160GB-As far as I know, it's the same as the 120GB one, just more capacity

as for the 120GB and 160GB, I am not sure if they have been released yet or not, but the 80GB is your best bet

When I say memory card slots, I mean cards like Compact Flash, Secure Digital, Memory Stick Pro, and xD cards, like the ones you would use in a digital camera, not like PS2 memory cards, the adaptors for those are sold seprately for I think around $15, and plug into a USB port

You better wait until the new Metal Gear Solid/80gb ps3 bundle hits the stores soon. It is capable of playing about 80% of ps2 games. It has been out of production for a while, its factories were refitted to make it with 65nm cpu's, which are more energy-efficient. It's got the same card slots and number of usb ports as the 60gb, but lacks the ps2 cpu, using emulation instead.

The 40gb is the only one currently in retail and does not play ps2 games, or have card slots. It has 2 usb ports.

The 60gb is the launch version, has the ps2 cpu and can play all ps2 games. You can't get it retail, but if you look around you could find a used one for a reasonable price. It has slots for SD cards, memory sticks and compact flash, and 4 usb ports. The most sought-after ps3.

The 20gb is a discontinued launch version. It plays all ps2 games, just like the 60, but has no card readers or wi-fi. It's also hard to find, but if you can find one, you could maybe get a good price.

All ps3's play ps1 games. All but the 20gb have wi-fi. All have HDMI 1.3 output and gigabit ethernet. Who has ever needed Gigabit ethernet, as opposed to 100Mbit? Anyway they all have it.

Unfortunately, there are no models currently in production that have backward compatability. The three models that did have backward compatability were the 20GB, 60GB and the 80GB models.

The 20 and 60GB models had complete backward compatability and the 80GB model had about 90% backward compatability.

The 40GB model (which is the only model still in production) didn't have ANY backward compatability. There is rumor of a new model coming out in June but the speculations are that it won't have backward compatability.

I would recommend finding the 60GB model which is still available new online. This model has all of the features that ANY of the models had AND has full backward compatability.

    Hope this helps.

If you want to play PS2 gewt any PS3 that isnt the 40 gig because that doesnt have backwards compatability. Other than that 40 gig also has less USB slots and no Card reader. The pther models are 60 gig 80 gig and 20 gig but only the 80 gig is in production after the 20 and 50 gigs being discontinued.

Here is a table of the differences in the PS3s:

1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.

2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim. Not manufactured anymore.

3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 60-70% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.

4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black, silver and white colors. White and silver versions are on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption, other versions use 90nm). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version. 40GB doesn't support SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc). Has no chrome trim.

5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 60-70% of PS2 games can be played.

Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.

They are all based on Blu-ray. They all play PS1 games. Apart from the differences listed above - they are the same.

let me help from what i know so far...

60gb is the ONLY ps3 that plays ps2 games all the rest are just with bigger memory, the 60gb are now discontinued but you can find them on amazon and ebay, the 20gb and 80gb and i think a 120gb are coming out but all are ps3 and ps1 only i think... so yea the ps3 is kinda 1 system is better than all but it owns the 360 no doubt about it, the 360 u gotta pay £25-£30 a month for the internet and £60 for sumet so it works so yea the 360 is down in the consoles, as for the Wii it's getting duller and duller so yea the ps3 owns all.

ther's none at the moment but in around june the 80GB is coming to the UK or it's already in US if you live there. Apprently it's going to be in the US with MGS 4 for only $500 which is only £250 which is really cheap. And yes it does have BC however it's not as good as the 60GB's but that's been discontinued. The 80GB is the one for you.
