What can happen to a dog that ate a chicken bone?

well chicken bones esp leg bones are sharp and thin when cracked, and the dog will most of the time just swallow chunks of it, the sharp broken bones will pierce sometimes the stomach or somewhere in the gastric tract, and will cause internal bleeding.

watch out for black stool this means the bleeding is in the stomach area, if its red stool the bleeding is somewhere in the rectal or colon area.

Chicken bones can be dangerous for dogs to eat -- especially cooked chicken bones -- because they're dry & brittle and they splinter into lots of tiny (and sharp!) pieces inside your puppy's tummy after they've been chewed & swallowed.

Since there isn't much that you can do after the chicken bones have been ingested by your dog, you simply need to monitor him closely for the next few days.

Keep checking his stools to see if the bones pass. Watch for blood in the stool, or any signs that he's straining to defecate.

Perhaps the best thing you can do is try to "cushion" the tiny bones inside your dog's tummy by overfeeding him a little more over the next couple of days. Cooked rice (that's completely cooled first) is ideal, because it is gentle on a dog's stomach and digestive tract. You could serve up a small helping of plain white rice alone, or mix some cooked rice in with your dog's normal dog food.

Then, you just wait and see.

It could, because it has been cooked, splinter and create tears in his stomach and/or esophagus which can be very serious. Call your vet. My dog did this last year and I took him to the vet to get an xray just to make sure there weren't any rips/tears. Luckily he was able to pass them without any trouble.

Raw chicken bones are actually good for your dog and aid in digestion, but make sure your dog is supervised when eating raw bones.

There is a possibility that it can create an intestinal blockage, which could be fatal. You should take your dog to the vet for an X-ray. Surgery might be required to remove the bone. If the bone is small enough, the digestive system will likely soften it to the point where it will be passed without problems.

The smaller the breed, the more of an issue it's likely to be.

Uncooked chicken bones won't bother a dog, however cooked ones can splinter & pierce the esaphagus & digestive tract. However your pooch is not the first to steal a drummy LOL.

I would watch him for signs of problems such as listlessnes, bleeding, panting, nervousness etc. but most likely, he'll be ok. ;)

The main concern about dogs or cats eating chicken bones is that they could choke on it. Chicken bones tend to break in slivers and they are sharp enough that it can puncture the throat and getting stuck thus, causing them to choke. If chicken bones is bad for the dogs digestive system, then chicken might be bad for us or for them all in all.

The concern with feeding a dog chicken bones is that they eat so fast the bone could splinter and tear the dogs throat. If the dog has already swallowed it then the dangerous part has already passed. Just keep an eye on it to see if it acts as though it injured its throat. If you feed it and it eats then it's probably fine.

Well if he's still acting fine then all is well because the concern with chicken bones is that they break up when they chew them and they can cut their throat.. they are very sharp.

Hi, Chicken bones can splinter and get stuck in their throat.

I think you might just have to wait it out. my old dog ate a chicken bone once and it splintered and he had to have an operation to get it removed.
