Help! With sprinklers!?

Can I use the risers of sprinkler heads to set up a drip system....I have this area that I am turning into a flower...the area has sprinklers already but, I would rather have a drip system or may be somebody could give advice on how to get some low spraying sprinkler heads. The current ones spray to high and far.

A multi-valved head that attaches to a sprinkler riser is sold in the bigger hardware stores. It has about six separate valves that attach to drip irrigation hose, and each one can be adjusted to what ever requirements you have. The one I have is black and about 3 inches in diameter by about 2.5 inches tall, with a 1/2 inch female pipe thread in the bottom.

You can take off the sprinklers that are connected with 1/2" threaded risers. Buy short rises, apply teflon tape around the threads and and get threaded 1/2" caps to cap them off. Save a few risers and screw on a 90 degree pvc fit with a slip opening on the other side. You can buy a compression insert that you glue inside the slip fitting that will accept 1/2 drip hose. You can use a combination of drips or drips with low volume sprinkers designed to attached to the drip hose. They come with stakes you can push into the ground. I like the ones that come with an adjustable spray patter up to 360 degrees. These are more expensive so you may want to choose preset micro-sprinklers that come in a variety of arc from 15 degrees to 360 degrees.

If the current sprinkers you are replacing are a single zone on our sprinkler controls, you will have to pay attention to balancing the the flow rate of the microsprinklers with the drips so that they both emit the right amount of water by the time you want to turn them off. If you have two zones you are replacing, I would make one drip and one microsprinkler so you can adjust the timing of each according to season and weather. If your current system has a controller, all you need do when you are done is to adjst the timer for your zone or zones.

Everything you need to do this job shoulbe at Lowe's or Home Depot and it should cost you between $75 and $150 to complete -- depending on how big the area is and what microsprinklers you choose.

    Good Luck!

What if you turned the water down a little bit and then they wont spray so far? Or you could just get a different style sprinkler, like a fountain style.

You can pick up drip system hoses at places such as WalMart. I have one and they are very nice. It fits onto a regular faucet and you just turn it off and on anything you wish.
