Some say its a "feeling" of accomplishment...I say its unnecessary pain that one shouldnt have to go through to feel as though an accomplishment has been made!

You know what ... I think that is what is wrong with society now and days. We have so many choices to do things and we want that instant gratification, immediate result or the short-cut way of doing things.

Granted, every woman has the choice to birth a baby the way she wants to with or without drugs, but why are we so quick to reach for something to numb the pain only because we FEAR it? What would you do if you had no choice but to have a natural birth like many of our ancestors did? They didn't have the luxury of asking for an epidural like women of today do. Most babies were born at home with the use of midwives coaching them through the whole thing and without any medication. I feel like women who want to experience the natural pain of childbirth are only doing what has been done since the beginning of time and before the advancement of medical technology. I don't blame those women for at least trying to do what our bodies were intended to do. On the other hand, there is an advantage to having the medical technology available because it has saved a lot of lives of many women and babies that were in distress during labor- so I don't discount it either.

All I'm saying is that we as humans can be so conditioned by these new advances that we don't even give ourselves a chance to experience things as they should be in their most simple, natural form- thus missing out on an incredible experience of knowing what it is like to truly work hard for something and appreciate the fruits of our labor (no pun intended).

I don't think anyone actually "likes" to feel pain, but I don't put drugs into my body unless I absolutely HAVE to, and even then, I hate it.

I don't know if I have an exceptionally high pain tolerance or what, but I didn't think labor was all that bad. I mean, yeah, it HURT, but I was fine without pain meds.

My biggest fear about having an epidural or any other "numbing" type of procedure is that it would drag the pushing stage out longer than it needed to be. I wanted to pop 'em out quick ... and I did. And narcotics make me sick, so I vehemently refused those, both during labor and after childbirth.

  • it wasnt for me and ive gone through it twice and will a third time anything to do with liking the pain or wanting the experience i did feel proud that i could go through it like the women did before there were drugs but my choice was that no one and i mean no one is sticking a needle in my back i have a big issue with that and have known of people having many back problems due to having it i ask you why do you get an epidural its your opinion and the way you wanted your labor to go it doesnt make someone crazy for not getting pain meds just as much as i dont think your crazy for getting them with all the risks

Haha, I don't understand it either. Sometimes I think that people like to test their pain threshold. (Mine happened to be four centimeters, and 35 hours of induced labor!) My mom is a nurse though, and she says " GET AN EPIDURAL!" because other than slowing labor down, it (most of the time) has little to no effect on then baby.

It's not complete torture. It's better for your baby. My baby was born alert and looking around. I did do a water birth. (Soooo nice. No needles ether.) Every person is different though. Your birth is yours. No one else should plan it for you.

I went with no drugs because I'd taken enough medical classes to know what they would do to my body and to my baby. I don't like pain though, so I did my research. Pain during labor is caused by fear and panic. When you are afraid your body kicks in the fight-or-flight response and shuts of circulation to any organ deemed unnecessary. That includes the muscles used during the birthing process. If you aren't afraid you shouldn't be in pain. Worked for me. It made having a baby more like running a marathon instead of being tortured. I actually enjoyed most of my labor (I did get exhausted and wish I could see a finish line after a while.)

i had both my kids natural, and believe me it wasnt because I liked the pain..

Every woman has there own reason for not taking pain reliefs.

Mine personally were... I dont like any kind of meds that can make me feel dopey so I wouldnt take the pain meds.

And I chose not to get an epidural because the idea of them sticking a needle in my back scared the crap out of me, lol..

I agree with Melba. It does not have to be torture if you are well trained and keep completely relaxed. I have had hunger pains before that were worse than labor. I have had four without medication and would do it no other way, unless I had serious complications. Besides with the method I used, you are allowed to eat during labor so you don't get weak from lack of food.

  • because its their decision! i am 28 weeks pregnant with my first and want to give birth with no pain meds but am open to drugs if i feel like i'm loosing control. this is my personal decision and when you decided to have drugs, that was yours. i am greatly against a epidural for me because i can't imagine why anyone would want a needle poked into their spine to control pain that is suppose to happen with birth! why risk paralysis for a couple hours of complete numbness? but that is just my opinion and i try not to judge but sometimes questions like this.........

no one questions your choice of an epidural. for me, i looked it up and decided that the bad points outweighed the good points for me and i decided against it. i had entonox, for me it was about being in control of my labour and my body and keeping a clear head, the gas and air only took the edge off the pain.

i didnt 'like' the pain of labour, but to me it was bearable.

also, my baby was born very awake and alert as its a fact that some meds can make baby very sleepy at birth. maybe it wasnt down to my choice but it never done me or my baby harm
