The same thing an alternator does on a car...it creates electricity to run all your electrical accessories, to keep the engine running ( firing the spark plugs ), and to keep the battery charged.
As for cost, it all depends on the make and model of bike. They are not all the same...

The alternator creates electricity which charges the battery and runs the electrical on the motorcycle. The cost will depend on the bike and your location.
