How would Energy Shield's Work (In Theory)?

What kind of particles would I need to make a field around a spacecraft that would repel or deflect beam weapons? Could this same technology deflect solid objects or at least small particles like micrometeors? What would be the biggest problem in maintaining that defense system?

Thanks.

A magnetic field would deflect a beam of charged particles that was being fired at you, but not a gamma or neutron beam.

    beta radiation (-1) - deflected

    alpha radiation (+2) - deflected

neutron radiation (0) - not deflected

gamma radaition (0) - not deflected

I don't know. Just throwing in two cents.
