Who, or what, do you serve? Why do you need to?

What does the term 'in service' mean to you? What purpose does this service have? What does it mean to serve a God/gods?

An omnipotent God doesn't really need your help, does he?

The gods still exist without you demonstrating faith, don't they?

Regardless of you beliefs, why 'serve' them? And is service to other people included in your obligation to serve God/gods?

(by that I mean the religious authority appointed by whatever belief structure you subscribe to)

I could guess the Christian answer, but I'd rather hear it from a Christian. I am very interested in the concept of service in other religions as well though.

I serve God, by serving those around me. My family my friends and I do allot of outreach, ministering to drug addicts, alcoholics, and people with other addictions. I feel it's where God wants me to be, i couldn't imagine living a life only gratifying my own needs. What good am I if I'm not any use to anyone else.

God is the one who is ultimately in control, so why shouldn't I serve him to help his will be done instead of rejecting him and his plan for me and live a worthless and painful existance. I find it easier to serve God than flawed human beings. And no other entity has proved itself to me to be in control of the universe, so God is my main choice.

Who ELSE do I serve? The ones I love: my husband, my children, my friends. Those that support me, I support them too.

I serve my savior, God. To A Christian, like myself, to 'serve' means to be faithful to Him...to put 100% of your faith, love and trust into Him and only Him. By serving and praising my God I know that I will always be provided for and will never be alone. (To put it very vaguely)

Yes the gods exist with or with out us and nope I don't serve any of them. Now if I were a priest of one of them I would. But I'm not so, nope.

As a Taoist, I have no religion. I have a belief system. There is no one to "serve" but myself and humanity in general.

Christians will tell you that they serve their god, but will be hard pressed to tell you how or why they serve.

In Hinduism, "service" is called dharma, and it is simply a path to god/moksha, breaking the cycle of reincarnation. So its really just do your duty so you can be freed of the world.
