"""The fact that the founding fathers prayed at school graduations and advocated such just goes to show you that the founding fathers didn't understand the constitution."""

"On every question of construction carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text or invented against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed." --Thomas Jefferson to William Johnson, 1823. I agree.
"I say to you, Search the Scriptures! The Bible is the book of all others, to be read at all ages, and in all conditions of human life; not to be read once or twice or thrice through, and then laid aside, but to be read in small portions of one or two chapters every day, and never to be intermittent, unless by some overruling necessity."

Very ridiculous, but Souter has a point. The Founding Fathers were even confused by the wording of the Second Amendment years after the Constitution was drafted, so it makes sense they may not have understood the implications of the First Amendment. Back then, though, there were no public education systems and the government didn't fund schools, so mandatory religious education in schools was not seen as a violation of the First Amendment.

As a Brit I have no idea what the different amendments mean, but to prevent children from praying in school seems like the attitude of a repressive regime. If it was happening in Europe the US would condemn it as a restriction of freedom to practise your faith.
How can Americans say they live in a free country when they can't even pray in school? I'm not meaning to be insulting, it just baffles me!

Interesting comment made by Justice Souter. This helps prove why our political system is such a mess...

Our founding father understood the constitution along with everthing else... far more than we are ever going to allow ourselves to understand.
We are soooooo blinded by confusion.....

That is a totally ridiculous statement.
But, I've come to expect totally ridiculous statements from the folks who are trying to get rid of God.
What amazes me is that these ridiculous statements are accepted by tolerably intelligent people....

treaty of tripoli article 2 try reading it my friend. It states, plainly that this country was NOT founded on the Christian religion, so separation of church and state= good idea
also, not everyone is a Christian, so telling children of other faiths to "praise Jesus" can really offend people

That statement is not even in our constitution.
By the way,why is it I vote in a church?

hey i don't see what your problem is! you have the right to pray in school in your own little corner, JUST NOT FORCE A CHRISTIAN PRAYER ON EVERY STUDENT IN THE DAMN SCHOOL.
what's so hard to understand ?? sheesh
actually i think you understand that very well, you just wanna feel SUPERIOR that's all you can't be treated equally it eats your hearts out that you're not special since you think you are "SAVED" by some imaginary friend who for whatever reason favors you.
