Need someone not afraid to answer my question?

my 4wk old baby has picked up a cryptosporidium (intestinal parasitic infection) from my 2yr old, and I'm worried - the 2yr old has vomiting and diarrhoea from it, and the local health authority rep told me the infection can last up to a month...!! My newborn can't take that.

BUT

Garlic is fantastic for killing parasites - this is ok for the 2yr old, but how can I get garlic into my 4wk old? Orally? In breastmilk? homeopathically? wrapped onto his feet (absorption thru skin)?

What is the best way?

I want people who have a clue what they're talking about to answer here, and are not afraid to make health suggestions (PC and err-on-the-side-of-caution be blowed!!)

Update:

Thanks for answers to date - as for asking the doctor, I did - I took my 2yr old there, and he sent me home with "there are no medications for this, just keep his fluids up" which I was already well aware of, and doing. I generally don't like conventional medication, as it tends to have bad side effects and can make the patient susceptible to other illnesses while they're trying to recover from the first one. I would rather give my baby minced garlic orally than antibiotics - and I don't like to feed my babies anything but breastmilk til 8mths or so!, so that is saying something.

The baby has no symptoms other than discoloured stools that have the same bad smell as his older brother (and possibly a little extra wind) so it looks like the breastmilk is supporting his immune system well, but I don't want him to be sick for a month, supported or not! The 2yr old will be introduced to garlic today, in some form - it'll be interesting!!

Update 2:

Also - any advice on whether heating/cooking destroys the active properties of garlic as an antiparasitic? i.e. do I have to give it to him raw, or can I cook it?

Through your breast milk. Start eating foods that are garlic laden. You can also take garlic supplements, if you wish.

I'm sure you can give it to the 2 year old. I heard that garlic in the breastmilk newborns/babies really enjoy it/like it. So I'm sure it can't hurt, if it dosnt work...I would just call the hospital and ask the nurse she give you some suggestion or maybe she will have the doctor call you back. I hope this helped I know I didn't give too much good information but I felt like I had to give some input, sorry about the 4week old :/

If your 4 week old is vomiting - the most important thing as you know is to keep them hydrated. Give a dropper full of water or pedialyte every 10-15 minutes.

It is not recommended to give garlic to babies under 6 months old. Call your health food store and see if they have any safe suggestions, because the garlic may cause more pain and vomiting. With that said - you are the mom and you can always take a garlic press and press the garlic juice out of the garlic. Add a few drops into a bottle or sublingual.

Good luck and I hope you get everyone feeling better quickly.

Well there is certain no harm in you eating a whole whack, most babies actually drink more milk after mom has eaten garlic so they like the taste.

I've used grapefruit seed extract for systemic thrush for me and my toddler and newborn. However I only used it in the mouth topically for the baby more than ingested. It is supposed to be very safe, here is some info on using it for parasites:

Here's what I could find about garlic oil:

Another thing I have been trying to find solid information on is the internal use of diatomaceous earth in humans, particularly children and breastfeeding women. Many sources say it is perfectly safe, some sources say it can deprive the body of minerals particularly calcium (which is weird because it contains a lot of calcium). So you might want to look into that too. DE is highly effective and frequently used in livestock (*lol*). It is considered safe for "normal" people from what I can tell.

Another thing that I haven't looked into yet is Microhydrin but I have a friend who is nagging me about it. That may be helpful as well, but I haven't even googled it yet.

Source(s): Do NOT ever give pedialyte or any ORS to a breastfed baby unless they will not take milk from the breast, bottle, cup, or dropper! All pedialyte does is deprive the baby of needed antibodies and wreck the pH of the gut making it more susceptable to infection. Formula fed babies are already screwed as far as their gut flora and pH

Do not give your baby garlic, they tummies are not capable of digesting it until 8 months. Like what one of the other people said, you can eat lots of garlic and it will be transfered through your breast milk. Also since your 2 year old and your 4 week old have diarrhea and vomiting, it wouldn't hurt to give them some pedialite. It is safe to give to infants, but don not replace breast milk with it. Our little babies especially at 4 weeks will get dehydrated really quick. But I would also see a doctor.

  • dude...fer real, i wouldn't put garlic in my 4 week old. try calling the doctor, they can atleast suggest something you can do . I know you dont want to hear it, but with a 4 week old, its not worth risking anything. If you are seriouse about it, i would try eating garlic myself, and then breastfeeding, somethings pass through, and garlic seems like something that might. But like i said i would call ur doc cause diarrhea and vomiting can lead to dehydration and all sorts of things...keep breastfeeding for sure.

Has your doctor suggested a treatment? In some cases I think homeopathic remedies can be tried but with a newborn, IDK, I don't think I'd rely on that as my sole source of treatment. At least be sure that he is getting plenty of breast milk and maybe pedilyte. Dehydration is of big concern and can happen *quickly*. It is probable he will need IV fluids if he experienced vomiting and diaherra.

But.... since you asked about garlic I would suggest that you eat a lot of garlic and continue BFing. The success of skin absorption is disputed. And orally will be a choking hazard.

    Overall... be responsible.

hmm...well i would first research how safe it would be to give a one month old garlic. and maybe take in more garlic into your system since u are bf anyway. when u express milk add it in. breastfeeding alone will help fight this anyhow. good luck. this is just my two cents, now going to google cryptosporidium

ok i know when my son was colic that milk was the one that did it u might not want to eat the garlic so to go through your breast milk it might be enough to help but u dont what him or her to have them bug and them a upset tummy. i dont know much about the bug but i do know alot of breastfeeding have been doing it for 7 and half months. i am socked that your doctor didnt give u something that would help for it. well i hope u think it over before doing anything i dont know if i helped. but i wouldnt give it to your baby straight with him or her only be 4 weeks. oh do u have it. u would be amazed with how god made our bodies. if u are breastfeeding i think that will help the baby not get sick your body knows what is going on with the baby and what the baby needs. your body could be making stuff to fight the bug in your baby. well good luck sorry if i wasnt any help.

    Hi,

I really have no advice but wanted to tell you that you can ask also in Y!A - Health - Alternative Medicines (if you didn't already). Maybe you can find more info there too.

Best of luck and I hope your babies get well soon.
