So the first Korean in space is space is a woman. What does this mean for women's equality?

I personally believe that, more or less, a woman can accomplish anything a man can. It would seem this is a norm among Koreans, also. Would it be safe to assume that among most 'modern industrial nations' that women's equality is the rule, not the exception? Certainly, all kinds of biased thinking occurs in some amount everywhere, but, as a rule, it is safe to assume that in most places a woman can accomplish what a man can, right?

Update 2:

April 8th. It's in the article. She's the second Asian woman in space.

Update 3:

I was just under the impression that, in most Asian countries women populate legislative and parliamentary bodies out the wazoo. It seems to me that many people believe that accepted, cultural violence and oppression of women is commonplace, when it really isn't. The occurrences of such things as cultural phenomena is, of course, deplorable.

It's worth noting that, in Russia, men and women have been equal as far as profession and labor since Lenin, and female cosmonauts urinate on the truck tires for luck too, just like the men.

Update 4:

Anonymouse: I agree with you, actually. Which is why I bring this up. I'm not sure it is supposed to be revolutionary, since, as I say, men and women are considered professionally equal in most industrialized nations.

Update 5:

So the general opinion is that this is more or less a dead issue, since men and women are (duh) professionally equal in most industrialized nations. Good Good. I thought that was true, myself. Personally, I would have not really noticed the story myself, if it were not for the fact that most of my contacts are GWS posters.

    Such an outdated question.

That's like if a black man went to space and someone asked "what does this mean for the abolishment of slavery." Women are already equal. Just because there are no women in the NFL, that doesn't mean that the NFL is sexist.

In Korea, these women are referred to as "Ms. Strong" and can be very independent. To be honest, even though I am a man, I have not noticed significant discrimination towards women in more urban environments.

I can't say the same for places like Louisiana though...

It means nothing. Men and women are both able to travel into outer space.

It means little or nothing. The fact that they have had to make an issue of the fact it's a woman, says it all really.
