Assuming it's the same as on my 96 Ram B2500 van (4x2)... if it's got sort of an octagonal shape to it (might be obscured by grime and dirt), it's a threaded type ball joint. What you will need to do is go to Advance Auto Parts or Autozone and rent a ball joint separator, and a ball joint removal socket. You're looking at about $190 for a deposit, but you get it all back when you return the tools. I'm assuming your largest socket wrench is a 1/2", at which point you'll need a 3/4" converter from any standard hardware store. While you're there, also pick up a 4-foot pipe with a large enough inner diameter to slip over your socket wrench's handle (to make it a 4-foot handle instead of 1-foot, for the added torque needed here). The tricky part will NOT be removing the ball joint from the control arm -- rather, the tricky part will be popping the knuckle, which you need the separator for. Get it on the boot, and just whail away at that damn thing until your knuckles are raw and you think it's not gonna work.... just keep going. You shouldn't need to remove the control arm itself or the shaft at all.

Source(s): Trust me, the feeling of that ball joint stud finally seperating from the knuckle is the greatest thing in the world....
