For the ASVAB: what is considered a good, bad, and/or average score?

The ASVAB is not like typical tests. Each service breaks down the overall score (called the AFQT - for Armed Forces Qualification Test), into different categories - referred to as line scores. Line score categories vary from branch to branch, and are in such areas as Mechanical Maintenance, Clerical etc.
A "good" Score is one that puts you in the "upper aptitude categories", which is a 50 or better.
The average score nationwide is about a 42.
A bad ASVAB Score is one that doesn't qualify you for enlistment, and each service has a different minimum (with exceptions) - most range from 31 to 36.
The test is free, and the scores are good for 2 years. Many High Schools allow the ASVAB test at school, or you may take one without being obligated through any recruiter in any branch.
The scores only help you in picking/qualifying for enlistment and your training. They can come into play later in the military if you try out for certain programs (like Officer training or Special Forces), and for reclassifying into another job field that may have minimum score requirements.
Go take it!!

the average score on the asvab is actually about a 45. anything over a 50 is considered an "alpha" that is they can basically get any job. your asvab score just shows what you know. they have a line score called a GT, and it is important, because it shows your potential for learning. the other line scores are only used in a case such as this:
a person gets a 36 on the asvab, and wants to be a mechanic, but the score requirements are a 40. they will check the mech line score, and if it is a high score, you can still get the job.
Lots of people think that if they get really high scores they will get something better, but it really doesn't matter after the 50.
in other words if you get a 80, and a person gets a 55, they can still get the same jobs, and will get the same benefits
(a good GT score is anything over a 110)

The ASVAB is used to see what jobs you qualify for. The higher your score the more positions are available. 35 is low, high 40's to low 60's is average, and anything above 70 is good. They also look at your GT scores from the test as well. Later on in your career if you decide to change your MOS these scores are used as well (but I think asvab scores are only good for 2 years and you might have to retake the test). No one is expected to make perfect scores on the test (although there are some that come close or do). It's comprised of questions from different subjects. If you have a certain field you're wanting to go to I would focus more on the subjects that have something to do with that field. For example if you are wanting something in the medical field, I wouldn't exaust myself studying to make a perfect score in the mechanical section.
march2success.com is great for helping to prepare for the asvab (site recruiter recommended me to).
