An obsetrician is the doctor for a pregnant woman. A pediatrician is a doctor for the baby. As for a doctor that helps a woman during the baby's first year, I have know idea what you are talking about. You should continue to see your gynecologist once a year after the baby is born for routine pap smears and general "womanly check-ups".

If all you want is to handle essentially normal pregnancies and normal vaginal deliveries (no complications), you may want to be a midwife or a doula. If you want to handle normal and problematic pregnancies and be able to do complicated procedures, you'd want to get your MD and specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology. If you want to handle children, specialize in Pediatrics then subspec in neonatal and infant pediatrics. If you don't want to wait that long, you can be a nurse-practitioner.

Long ago there was a specialization that was both the practice of obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics, this was called maternal and child health. They have since separated the two and now we have ob-gyne and pediatrics.
