growing mushrooms questions?
am a chef and want to grow mushrooms to cook with at home. have researched and will use the brown rice flour cake method. am wondering about yield...i plan on using 1/2 pint jars for my cakes and am wondering how long each cake will continue to produce mushrooms and what will the avg total yield per cake be? how about if i wanted to dry some of the mushrooms...what would the avg total yield be of one cake if all of the mushrooms were dried?

First, is the strain of mushroom you plan on growing good for the PF TEK method, which you speak of? Shittake mushrooms will work for PF TEK, but need to be grown on a wood product, not brown rice flour. Other mushroom strains will not grow using PF TEK.
The cakes will usually produce about three flushes, meaning you will be able to harvest mushrooms off of them three times before the cakes are depleted in nutrients. You'll want to dunk your cakes for 24 hours before putting them into the terrarium and then each time after a flush. That will rehydrate the cakes and improve yields. The amount the cakes produce will vary with conditions and the health of the mycellium.
If you want to produce large amounts of mushrooms, I would do this: Liquid culture out your spores so that you already have mycelium growing. Then inject that into bigger 1 pint jars or even quarts. Colonization will be fast, minimizing risk of contamination and the cakes should produce more and bigger mushrooms. Plus, it's easier to innoculate and care for only 10 big jars as opposed to 20 or 30 small jars.
I can't really say what the yield would be because it depends on the strain and conditions, but I will say that growing mushrooms is fun - kind of like a science experiment and it can be like a hobby. It's also not expensive, so you might as well try it anyway and see how it works out.

The canned and recent mushrooms you purchase on the grocery have been grown in horse poo and different waste. If they don't seem to be a toxic style and feature been washed, there will have to be no concern. All the greens you're grown in a few variety of fertilizer. If they're healthy greens, wager what they have been grown in. (Mixed with filth of path). Eating some thing with out washing it's dicy. - Good success there!

I think it will depend on the variety of mushroom you intend to grow. What do the sellers of your desired variety state you should expect?
