Historical fiction?

When I was a teeanger I really loved the novels of Jean Plaidy, many of which are set in the Tudor period. My favourite is 'Murder Most Royal' which is about Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, I also really liked 'Royal Road to Fothernighay(about Mary, Queen of Scots), 'Evergreen Gallant' (Henri IV of France) 'The Thistle and the Rose' (the sisters of Henry VIII) 'Gay Lord Robert' (Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley) 'Daughter of Satan' (early settlers in New England). She wrote a great many others, and most of them still seem to be in print. They are mostly about queens and king's mistresses, and the focus is more on relationships, love affairs etc, rather than on war.

Georgette Heyer wrote very good light-hearted romances mostly set in the Regency period. Most of them are not really historical, that is they are mostly not to do with real historical people or events, but they have a very good period atmosphere, amusing dialogue and good stories.

A book I really loved as a teenager (and still do) is 'A Traveller in Time' by Alison Uttley, which is about a girl who goes to stay with relatives in Derbyshire in the north of England, and finds herself slipping back and forth in time to the reing of Queen Elizabeth I, and becomes involved with the Babbington family and their plot to rescue the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots from Wingfield Manor. It is a book I really love, with memorable characters and a wonderful period atmosphere, and a dash of romance too.

W.E.B. Griffin has written some really good "historical fiction" novels that deal mostly with the military. A good series to use would be his Brotherhood of War series. The series follows a cast of characters from WWII through the Vietnam war, and is good reading regardless; however, each book could stand alone when evaluating the historical accuracy of the background events. I checked quite a bit of the information out as I was reading the series for the first time, and quite a bit of it was historically accurate, albeit "artistically embellished" for entertainment value.

Looking here under 'historical fiction, teen' --two books look better than average to me, and they get five-star reviews, which are the best at Amazon.

You can probably guess a lot by the title. A young Russian countess must flee her home, then work as a servant girl in England or starve. Again, there is a romantic interest.

Hey, I'm a teen girl myself who loves historical fiction. Here's some good ones (I personally tend to lean to the 1600-1800s range but I included some from outside that range):

The Scarlet Pimpernel - its about the French Revolution; centers around a romance. very good book.

The Dear America series is pretty good. There are a couple of different series that are fictional journals of women centering around historical events. I recommend the diary of Madeline Beck. It's about WWII and its excellent.

Fever, 1793 - centers around a Yellow Fever epidemic

True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle - pretty good book; its about a young girl who rides a transatlantic ship in the 1800s. She discovers the crew is shifty and a lot of action follows.

Girl with a Pearl Earring - its taken from the famous painting; takes place in the 1660's.

A Lesson Before Dying - excellent; not only historical fiction but thought provoking; centers around the racism in the south towards african americans and a man being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond - also very good. Tells about a girl who is falsely accused of witchcraft in about the 1680's. Its written very well.

Theres also a lot of good WWII books. All of these books are well written. They're not difficult to read. Most of them are very entertaining and kept me captivated. Hope this list helps!

As a teenager, I liked the historical novels of Thomas B. Costain an d Margaret Campbell Barnes. I also recommend the novels of Norah Loftsand those of Georgette Heyer. Although Heyer is best known as the inventor of the Regency romance, she also wrote a few historical novels in the stricter sense of the genre--Simon the Coldheart and Beauvallet stick in my mind. There's little violence in any of these and no explicit sex, but usually a strong love interest.

I love Linda Chaikin's books(specially Desert Trilogy and Heart of India series), and I also really like this series called 'Cheney Duvall M.D.' by Gilbert and Lynn Morris. Good romance, amazing characters, and Superb story plots. Check them out!

I don't know much historical fiction, but I can recomend some great books. Twilight(romance), Animal Farm(deep messages if you can find them, and relates to an event in history), and I am America and So can You by Stephen Colbert(very funny if you understand his humor and sarcasm.
