'california'...the term 'californee' has it's roots from the great depression when many people from the south migrated to california in the hopes of findin' jobs and a better life...'headin' out californee way fer a better life'...

actually it refers to the book "The Grapes of Wrath," not the movie. It generally, however, is just a representation of the Great Depression and the gold rush that subsequently occurred. There were rumors of gold in California, so everyone went to California to strike it rich. When they got there, there wasn't much gold, and certainly not enough to spread among the people coming and going.

It also is an in-joke reference to "The Beverly Hillbillies", since the moved to California from Bug Tussel.
