How long before I can start using my homemade compost?

I started a compost pile about 2 weeks ago....I am acutually surprised at how fast it seems to be breaking down! Generally how long should I wait until I start using the compost?

There's really no set rate. It can take two months or as long as over a year. Depends on what's in there, where you're at, etc. But if you look at it, and it is no longer recognizable, and looks like good dirt/soil, it's ready! Make sure to turn, stir, etc regularly, it helps to break it down quicker.
