Why is insurance a necessary element of a universal health care system?

We seem to be blinded by the insurance companies' lobbyists. Most universal health care systems require that even the poorest among us buy health insurance. Why?

If this country can spend trillions of dollars on an immoral 'war', it can afford to spend a few hundred billions of health care for every American.

For those who have the resources or desire to buy their own medical insurance and have their own private doctors, let them do it.

For those low-incomed legal citizens of the U.S.A., let them be allowed to walk into any hospital, show their Social Security card, and receive whatever medical treatment they need - at no cost, and without laborious paperwork.

Hospitals should not be "for-profit" - they should be ready and able to serve the health care needs of every legal U.S. citizen, whether they have private insurance or not. -RKO- 04/21/08

Here's a thought. In England, where I grew up, each WORKING person pays into the universal care system, so automatically get health care. It's very low compared to U.S. private insurance. Part of that payment covers people who are uninsured (not working). There's a co-payment on prescriptions but that's low compared to anything here in the U.S. Each person has an insurance number & card. Some Brits do buy private insurance as well.

A lot of people in the U.S. aren't aware that part of our private insurance premium is used for the uninsured.

I think the differences start when you take into consideration the doctor/hospital fees. Doctors in England are paid by the government on a scale. Doctors here charge as much as they can( but also have to cover high malpractice insurance).

We live in a society where greed has taken over. Whatever happened to gifted people becoming doctors or nurses to help the sick? On the other hand, people who sue over frivolous cases make me sick.

I agree with you, we need to start looking after our own, end this war, and bring Universal Health Care to the working U.S.

Source(s): Have lived in a country with a Universal Health System & got excellent care.

You are correct, the industry and our gov't are blinded by insurance companies' lobbyists...this society is NOT geared toward helping anyone who is unfortunate. It's a for-profit society that is for the profit of a few. The truth is, they don't want to help anyone get ahead, they don't want to help anyone who is less fortunate, they don't want to help the indigent, mentally ill, handicapped or veterans. They need the working poor to be right where they are to guarantee the profit for a handful.

Until we find another way of looking at society, it's not going to change. And when we do find another way, then we will have a revolution on our hands like nothing that has been seen before!

    Great question, RKO : )

i think of the NHS is a superb business enterprise and that's something that many British human beings show delight in. i think of that for the time of any civilised society shelter the sick ought to be a real somewhat than a privilege and that i plenty desire our device to the u . s . the place you get much less to your money and not something is certain. The NHS isn't suitable, like maximum structures there are flaws even nonetheless those flaws are notably minor and many times the NHS is an astonishing enterprise with stable priorities and a intense easy of care. there is likewise inner maximum sector for people who decide for to pay better for greater interest, luxurious and so on. so a procedures as I understood Obama became only bringing in some new form of coverage over there that's a shame because of the fact i in my opinion think of your us of a as an entire could be better off in case you observed a device similar to ours. i come across it unhappy that alot of individuals are treating this as a political left vs authentic wing subject and attempting to variety national healthcare as socialism the actual subject ought to be figuring out on the device below which the sick could be better off and that i think of the information teach overwhelmingly that device is easy well-being care.

Which is why I do not support Sen. Clinton's mandatory health plan I reserve that right--what may be good for my neighbor may not be good for my health care. There will be a hidden agenda with any mandatory health plan.....
