There are alot of remedies, but how advance is your DDD?
Have you had any ruptured, bulging or herniated discs?
If you have then some of the physical remedies should be talked over with your doctor. By physical, I mean physical therapy and especially a chiropractor! Chiropractors can be devastating to you if you are treated wrong and unfortunately it happens alot! There are alot of good ones out there if you decide to try it make sure that you take the time to interview them and choose one who is best for you and isn't out for your insurance or personal $$. I suggest you never see one if you haven't had a MRI and they have studied it.
Any exercise that you are comfortable with to strengthen
"Your Core" will help alot. Such as distance walking,Pilate's or Yoga.
There are other medications besides flat out pain pills to help with your condition and I suggest that if you want to go that way, either speak with your doctor or a different one if your doctor is set on prescribing pain meds (which is very unusual),and go over your options, there are new meds coming out all of the time!! Again, it all depends on the severity of your DDD.
How ever you decide to maintain your DDD, you will always have to be conscious of it and be very careful not to "make matters worse" .
Hope you find what you are looking for, Good Luck!!
Edit: Please overlook Gillianprowe's answer. I cannot believe that she would minimize your condition without knowing the circumstances involved. If you will read her long list of ailments, DDD is not listed, only a bunch of rambling there and her patting herself on the back for being helpful!! haha

DDD is not a disease but part of the aging process. It just means that the discs between the vertebrae are shrinking. Everyone goes through this, some never have any pain, other have pain, but narcotic pain killers are a wee bit over the top for this aging process. Unless every human over the age of 30 is on narcotics? The remedy, 'time'. At 60-65 the discs have fully dehydrated, shrunk and that is it. Best of Luck

Hey, not answering the question but I have this too. With three bulging disc's. I was on Methadone and everything under the sun. Good call. If you are not on narcotics now, do not go on them unless taken as absolutely only needed on bad days.

If the pain is to much to bare the is always the surgical option of fusing the disk to prevent movment. Though you wont bend as much but reducing the pain could be worth while.
Hard to say what else you could do usless u know the cause of the pain
Is it a pinched nerve?
Muscle spasm?
Other?
