Isn't transvestism really about fashion, not sexuality? (more in details)?
If, as wikipedia seems to say, trasnvestism is about wearing the other sex’s clothing, or cross-dressing, and NOT about straight sexual kinks, or homosexuality, then isn’t it really a fashion issue, rather than a sexuality issue?
Further, if this is the case, why would someone define themselves by their fashion choices?
Or am I missing something?
OK, I'm getting that people aren't agreeing with my understanding of transvestism. Where am I going wrong?
It doesn't help me to hear - no. you're wrong. without details to explain why.

There is a difference between transvestism and fetishistic transvestism. That line can sometimes be drawn with a razor blade, but it is there.
Often transvestism or cross dressing is about expressing some inner need or about alleviating stress. There is little to any sexual thrill attached.
Fetishistic transvestism is the other side of the spectrum, the only reason to cross dress is to get a sexual thrill, there is little internal need or desire for expression other then the desire to get off.

Think of the clothing as an accessory to in highten the person in who you wish to be.
The clothing isn't about your taste in clothing. I dress in femme to help others to realize that here I am I am female. But some still do not get it. I still get called by male pronouns even when I am standing there in a skirt and heels.
Cross dressing is by the way a fetish. This person gets off by wearing the opposite sex's clothing. For me wearing feminine clothing feels right. And helps for me to express my inner self.
Now do you understand? Otherwise send me an e mail and I will try again. Josie.

A fashion issue? LOL! ohhhh that was great! really I needed a genuine laugh today, thanks for providing.
Well, not being a transvestite myself, I cannot presume to answer for them, but no doubt someone will come along who can answer for them, and do so.
Really I admire your wanting to get to the bottom of this issue and find out what it's all about though, without being cruel or mean. That's admirable, good for you.
And thanks for cheering me up too, I've had a rotten rough night and needed that.

I disagree wholeheartedly with that. It IS about sexuality, but not about homosexuality or heterosexuality specifically. Its just a fetish. And sure, its fine - nobody should be mistreated or whatever because of a fetish. But all that "I'm just being me" and "I do it because it makes me comfortable" stuff tends to get it categorized with the rest of the gay world, while in reality we have nothing in common.

oh yeah. It is about gender and sexual identity. It is about comfort with one's own skin, with xy/xx, with society, with family. It is only incidently about fashion, in the same way that the board game Monopoly is about capitalism. It is also about homosexuality and the dread of homosexuality.

your first mistake....you actually believe what wikipedia says.
Here's a free life lesson. Don't believe everything you read online. Wikipedia, for example, is not a reliable source. It is made of what other people THINK and not facts.
Wikipedia is wrong in this regard.

Actually it's about power, if you want to totally abstract it to it's core. Fetish is sexual power. Getting that power and taking it away.
