I bought a new car and saw on the paper work: documentation fee, technical assistance fee, courtesy fee: ?

Purchased new car. Looked over paperwork and noticed: documentation fee, technical assistance fee, courtesy charge: I asked the salesman and he said he would find out and call me back. He hasn't called back. Does anyone know what these are for? Are these mandatory charges?

Just to clarify from the above poster, you do NOT have 3 days to return the car unless you live in California and purchased the policy. Fee's vary from dealership to dealership, and if you already signed the paperwork, then you already agreed to the fees. I don't know what a technical assistance fee is, so it doesn't hurt to ask, but don't expect and refund. Good luck.

Did you finance the car? If so how were these fees disclosed on the contract to finance? The Documentary fee is a legit charge and at least in Texas regulated, regardless all fees and adds must be disclosed on the contract to finance. You might give the Manager of the store a call then try the bank/finance company or your states Motor Vehicle Division.

I had a customer who for years called the Doc fee the Complimentary Fee as an inside joke, but to pay a Courtesy Fee?

Doc fee is the charge dealers add for all teh DMV, loan, title etc processing. You will see a doc fee on every car sold. In some states it is mandatory that the same doc fee be charged on every deal. Some states limit the amount a dealer can charge for doc fees. But, without knowing your state, I cant say for sure what laws apply to your situation

I have never seen a technical fee, or a courtesy fee.

But, if you have already signed the papers, then I suppose its a moot point. You agreed to the fees when you signed on teh contract.

Should have looked and asked before you signed. Once they get those on and you sign, you're stuck with them. They are just ways to raise the dealership profit margin. They have to get it delivered to sell it, and they have to detail it once it gets there, but if you let them they will add a delivery and detail charge to YOUR bill.

You need documents to sell a car, they are charging you for what they had to have. You had a question about the car, they are charging you a technical assistance fee. They were nice to you, so they are charging a courtesy charge...

Document fee might be the only legitimate fee. The others sound like junk fees added by the dealer. Good luck getting your money back. Next time Read before you sign. Keep in mind mortgage companies and other businesses do this too.

Always ask them to justify the fees, they are negotiable. Or you don't have to do business with them.

Rip off, rip off, rip off. Hey, isn't that courtesy charge a work of art? What "courtesy" have those turds done for you? Of course, they're hoping you'll forget the whole thing.

It's a sad day when you first have to negotiate the price of the vehicle, then you have to negotiate again with the "finance guy" when they add all those fees.

    Hello again,

Sounds like you should be shopping elsewhere. I do not invest in depreciating assets, however, once you arrive at a price you are willing to pay for the car, reduce your price by the amount of those pesky fees. It is another ploy to get more money out of you. In my opinion these fees are not mandatory.

    Sincerely,

Are they mandatory charges? NO. Did you sign the paperwork and pay these charges? Yes. Chalk it up to a lesson learned. READ the paperwork BEFORE you sign it.

i work in a honda dealership and we called that being jerked. those are extra fees dealership add to make extra money off the deal. It doesn't stop there, when you finance or lease that is where they really rape you on the deal. So that salesperson received a nice commission check off your deal.

No these are not . I believe you have three days to go back and change your mind. Rat finks are always on the lookout for young people that they can make extra money off of. A lawyer might be worth your while.
