What is a nice city/town to live in North or South Carolina?

I currently live in the NJ/NYC area and am looking to either move south to NC or SC or otherwise out west to Denver.

I'm in my mid 20s ...what would be a nice area to live in NC or SC...with good shopping, restaurants, and parks. I prefer to go hiking w/ my dogs or go to outdoor events rather than be in a club/bar ...so the town doesn't have to have an amazing night life.

I like the ocean and mountains...but if I had to choose one or the other it would be to live near the mountains. Job is flexible...so I'm not worried about that....as long as I'm close enough to a city.

Any suggestions?

The first responder is right..... Asheville, N.C., is where it's at!

The town feels like it should be in the West, tucked in the Rockies somewhere. It's a major mecca for people all over the state. If you're into the outdoors, this is the best town in the Carolinas.

You have a large granola community (you know, those Earth-conscious tree-huggers?), with tons of arts, the college, and awesome outdoor access! You're within 30 minutes to some of the best rivers for white water, hiking & biking trails, backpacking, rock climbing and more!

If you love this town, you'll appreciate the smaller Rocky Mountain communities in higher elevations!...

    good luck

Hi, I was looking for some travel info for myself and just happened to see your question. I have lived in NC and SC my entire life and I have enjoyed several cities in both states. I grew up in Greenville, SC and it is now a beautiful and booming city and you are very close to the mountains. I went to college in Charleston and that is my most favorite city in the world! So much culture, arts, and FUN places to go--also you are at the beach and the beaches there are a blast! I now live outside of Raleigh, NC and it is terrific! We are between the mountains and coast...about 1 1/2 to the beach and 3 hours to the mtns. Lots of parks and lakes here and a fun downtown nightlife. Now with being married and children I love Raleigh and this is my pick--but if you are young, looking for an amazing experience, fun culture, and beaches--I'd choose Charleston hands down....you'll love it. Whatever you choose, good luck! Have a fun adventure!

I would suggest NC over SC. As for cities i would suggest that you check out and maybe visit Wilmington North Carolina before you make a choice because it is a wonderful city with a somewhat large population (100,000+). But is has a very small town feel with the benefits of a large city. Many people fall in love with Wilmington immediately, check it out

For nearby mountains along with shopping, folk culture, and restaurants, I'd have to pick Asheville, NC.

For more job possibilities with a more fun city feel, it would be Raleigh, NC or Charlotte, NC.

For a little of everything, you can't go wrong with Greenville, SC........
