Do you think a mime is a terrible thing to waste, or do you think there should be open season on them?
Not that I would ever hurt one.
CV I recall Shields and Yarnell too. I did like them.

Some mimes are really good - others suck. I think it's like anything else in entertainment - if you can take something and make it seem new or novel, people will love it. It seems to me there was a mime artist around recently who didn't bill himself (herself?) as a mime, but did contemporary stuff based on mime. It was cool.
Michael Jackson put elements of mime into his dance routines in the eighties (the most famous element is the "moon walk", where he appears to be walking forward but moves backwards.)
Mime is a cheap way for Sci-Fi and fantasy movies to do effects, too. I love the way the cast of Star Trek used to mime out being tossed about on the bridge - or Shatner would mime out being mind-controlled.
When I was a kid, one of my favorites shows was Shields and Yarnell (sp?) They were a couple who did mime, and they were really entertaining (they'd probably seem lame now - that was a few years ago.)

Mimes are people, just like everyone else. Some people even enjoy the entertainment they provide.
Leave them alone.
