Is socialism better than democracy for the United States now?
A co-worker and I had a debate on the two types of government. He said people living in socialist countries were happier (Canada, France, UK). I don't know anyone who lived under a socialist state and couldn't reply.
Any thoughts on the subject?

Socialism does not work. It takes away peoples desire to achieve better. Socialism brings us all down to the level of the lowest common denominator. Socialism is shared misery. Does anyone remember the "Worker's Paradise"? Nope, it didn't work there either.
Our democracy is not perfect, but I like making my choices, myself. Not being made for me by the government. It should be "Government by the people, for the people. Not the other way around.

I always laugh when I see people post answers to these types of inquiries....
Socialism, by its true definition is a force of nature, just like capitalism and all the different aspects of socio-economic construction. Therefore you cannot avoid it, just look at America today and compare it to what the economy looked like 125 years ago...no one could ever have imagined the government giving money to poor people so they could spend it like the middle class, just so that large companies would benefit.
That is an effect of the physical forces of nature, that are a part of the economic structure.
I will only say a little bit for now, I know that plenty of conservatives will give me a thumbs down...but then they do not realize the sheer contradictory nature of what they are doing---do you realize that the wavelengths that YA is broadcast on was sold at a lower than market value price just so that it would be made more available to everyone?
That is a socialist policy as well...
So is socialism better than democracy? I think that democracy is better off because of socialist principles, adopted and refined by capitalists...nothing more

Since when were France and the UK socialist? We have a democracy very similar to that in America and our current government is the mix of socialism and capitalism that we voted for!

Social Democracies benefit more people. Those countries have better health, longevity and much lower infant mortality. They have longer vacations and enjoy good food and wine.

Those three countries are not happy, when they went to socialism and there taxes were raised the people were not happy. There health care systems are not what they had promised and they now have high unemployment and inflation.

those are democratic societies who have elected socialist.........
i think a lot of the strength of the us is the capitalistic ideal, with every man for himself, hard work, etc...but it wouldnt hurt to incorporate some socialist ideas in areas such as healthcare, energy and other essentials

It is a cop-out. It is easier to divvy all the responsibility to the Federal government. Oh boo hoo, times are hard...let's just give up our rights to the government instead of trying to fix problems. I suppose it is the necessary evolution of Democracy. Socialism, then totalitarianism, then revolution....

I dont know any either, but how does he know who is happier than whom? That is just silly. And even sillier to conclude that socialism is better on such a silly assertion.

Socialism is an utter failure everywhere. Don't be fooled by the utopia-seeking leftists who try to tell you otherwise.
