Pomeranian is very distressed - seems to be in pain...??

My Pom pup ( 5 yrs old) woke us up at 1:30 am - crying, fidgeting and scooting his bottom on the floor. I took him outside to see if he had to go to the bathroom - that hasnt helped. He had impacted anal glands 2x in his life - but never like this - all of a sudden & seeming to cause him a great deal of pain. I am not sure what to do to calm him down! He is REALLY freaking out! And it's the middle of the night... Anyone have any ideas????

Using warm compresses on the area often helps to relieve some of the pain and reduce swelling until you can get to the vet:.

If the dog is really distressed then you should take it to an emergency clinic. Even though he has had impacted anal glands before you can't be 100% sure that that is the cause.

If you can't go to the vet you could try expressing the glands yourself if you know how. This is best done internally ie. finger up the bum or you can try from the outside but that is not always successful when the gland is impacted. If you do try make sure you are gentle as you can cause more damage and you could increase the irritation.

The best advice would be to take the dog to an emergency clinic. If I had to come up with a home remedy I would probably think the most soothing thing would be to put the bottom area into a warm bath. Good luck.

My cocker spaniel has the same problem. They became infected. The Vet put him on antibiotics and he got better. He need to have them expressed often, one a month. Some times they have to be removed. I don't know what you can use being they up the anal cavity. Try placing a warm cloth against the area. That might help.

he may have impacted anal glands again, and having them 2 times already in his life, they probably get worse each time. look in the phone book and and call the vet, some vets leave an emergency phone number that you can call, they would be able to help you out.
