Definately bird seed. I was inspired several years ago by a priest who said that throwing rice is like symbolically throwing away the food that could save starving children from certain death by malnutritian. And the birds will be thrilled!

I agree, do not throw away food that could be fed to children who would kill to have rice on thier plates. Throw bird seed. Throw white rose petals, or petals that go with your color scheme. Or, do not conforn to the average wedding standards, and instead of throwing rice, do somthing else.

I thought it was bad to throw rice at weddings, because birds eat the uncooked grains, and they can eat many, then the rice puffs up due to the liquids in their digestive track, and boom, you have exploding birds.
Throw flower petals. They are cheap, biodegradable, and friendly to wild life.

I thought people were discouraged from tossing rice at weddings because if birds eat too much of the rice they could get really ill. (They say they will explode!)
I have seen people mostly use bird seed or bubbles.

nothing at all! what you do is tak an empy bag made to look like its is full and folded at the top, with you to the next wedding and when its time for you to throw the rice you just pretend to throw it and force the rest of the poeple the to use there imaginations. if and when they look at you strangly, just look at them and say "WHAT" and they will let it be. good luck and have fun.
its fun to act crazy!

Birdseed. It's better for the planet anyway...and for the birds...no mess to clean up (except for maybe what comes out the other end).
Bubbles are good too...and cheap (all you need is dish soap or Mister Bubble and water).
