If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask?

Do they get smart right before they ask the question?

Scientists have done brain scans which prove that the area of the brain related to intelligence show much more activity right before and after a question is asked. Initial research also suggests that a person's IQ does, in fact, go up by 20-30 percentage points while in the process of questioning.

Well, I'm a college professor and though I have heard many professors and teachers say, "there's no such thing as a stupid question", I wholeheartedly disagree. My students ask me stupid questions all the time!

I'd argue that truly stupid people don't ask questions. The people that ask stupid questions aren't stupid, they are usually just lazy. To illustrate, suppose I gave students an assignment and said it was due on the 28th...

A truly stupid person wouldn't ask any questions about the assignment or the due date even if he or she didn't understand or didn't hear my instructions. These are the students that would turn in the assignment on the 29th and say "I didn't know" when I wouldn't accept their late assignment.

A lazy student that wasn't paying attention might ask a stupid question like "when's the assignment due". It is a stupid question because I already answered it and by asking, they revealed that they weren't paying attention (not something you want to communicate to a professor that evaluates your performance!).

A "smart" student might ask for clarification of the due date. For example, he or she might ask, "do you mean the beginning of class?" or "if I emailed it by midnight on the 28th would that be acceptable?"

A "stupid question" in a forum like this one would be a question asked with the intention of mocking or hurting someone else.

Only really stupid people would come to a forum like this for the purpose of heaping abuse on some other group.

That is quite different from people who ask questions of some other group in an honest effort to understand them.

    For instance,

"Should we stone gay people?" is a stupid question, while "Why do most Christians think that being gay is a sin?" could be an honest attempt to understand Christian thinking.

"How can we cure the world of the mental disease called Christianity?" is a stupid question.

"Do people find their religion, or are they indoctrinated by their parents" could be an honest attempt to understand why some people believe as they do.

I hope you see the difference.

Of course, these kinds of questions are aimed at every group on here, but since I happen to be a Christian, I probably notice the ones aimed at Christians a bit more.

ooh- I think this is the first thing I've seen from you that made me credit you with some intelligence. Usually you're just embarrassing yourself. Good question. I'm going to say that questions aren't ever stupid if they're trying to shore up a hole in the knoledege.

Like what was it like when everything was black and white (like in the movie "Pleasantville". And this wasn't making fun of my age either. I would think it would be funny if it wasn't so scarey that she was serious. This was a 21 year old.

Stupid people ask questions like this:

What is the meaning of life?

    Are Catholics Protestant?

Why are Atheists in the R&S forum?

    Am I pregnant?

    Have another star sweetie! :)

Repetitive questions... the questions that appear day after day and hour after hour because they are too lazy to use the Y!A search to find what they are looking for. :-)
