I'm thinking about getting a dog...?

I need one that has short fur (my parents don't want it shedding everywhere)

I'd like it to be medium sized, not too small, and not too big.

I have a big yards and a lot of hiking areas, so an energetic dog would be nice.

I wouldn't mind having a dog that not bad to look at either.

Any suggestions, Yahoo!Answer users?

Any help is gretly appreciated.

Thanks.

Update:

What I meant to say is a short haired dog that doesn't leave hair everywhere.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Look for the (ahem) non shedding breeds. All dogs shed, but the non shedding breeds, what happens is their fur gets caught in the live fur, so it mats instead of sheds. That means haircuts every month. Get one from a shelter. Or rescue. Shelters and Rescues are FULL of good, decent dogs, and you'll be saving a life.

Never buy from a pet store. Please research puppy mills and their connections with pet stores. When you buy from a pet store, a portion of the money you pay goes back to help keep the puppy mill in business.

If the dog doesn't shed (much), it is because it has hair instead of fur and will need a lot of grooming/haircuts. Plan on spending $30+ every 4-6 weeks.

It might be helpful to take one of those quizzes that help you determine which breed is right for you.

Impress your folks with all the research you do on different breeds.

    Good luck!

a maltese is a hypoallergenic dog. they do not shed. they have hair just like humans. they are a small breed, good for a small/medium size yard, rarely bark, and can be very energetic. they are all white with black eyes and a black nose. very good looking i think. they will cost you a lot though, around $800 or so for a puppy.

Short haired dogs, for the most part, shed MUCH more than long haired dogs. If you want a medium sized, non-shedding and energetic dog, I would suggest a miniature poodle. They are also very attractive dogs, and don't have nearly as many health problems as toy poodles.

Whatever breed you choose, I encourage you to visit your local animal shelter, rescue organizations, and the pound. The link that someone else gave to PetFinder.com is a great one because it lets you look at adoptable dogs in your area from many rescue groups.
