How Do I trim an outside door to fit the frame?

I am to wide by about 2 1/2",but since it is a door for a side entrance I don't think I can trim it using a circular saw or plane. I don't have the reciept to return it or know where I can take it to be "fitted". Any suggestions?

Update:

I am to wide by about 2 1/2",but since it is a door for a side entrance I don't think I can trim it using a circular saw or plane. From what I can tell it is steel, or at least with steel plates front & back. I don't have the reciept to return it or know where I can take it to be "fitted". Any suggestions?

You can't just rip 2" off of a door. A solid core door is filled with particle board, with a strip of solid wood on the edges and a block of solid wood for the lockset. You will either need to adjust the rough opening by 2-1/2", or you will need to purchase the correct door for the opening size. Hope this helps.

You can`t cut that much off that width!

You`ll more than likely end up with exposed foam and nothing to hang the hinges on.

best bet would be to take it back to place of purchase and do a little pleading. You might try giving them the tale that someone at the establishment pulled the wrong width and you did`nt check it till after you lost your reciept.

Next time use a tape measure!!!

If its a solid wood door, you should be able to rip it with your skill saw, assuming there are no fasteners in the way, and your blade will reach through. rip it off the side with the hinges, so the door nob spacing will not be messed up. then route the hinge recesses, or chisel them out if you don't have a router.

you can clamp a straights edge to your door to assure that you have a clean cut, just measure from the edge of your blade to the edge of the blade guard and add offset your straight edge by that much, then when you make your cut, run the guard against it.

bring door back if you bought it at home depot or lowes there should be a barcode on it that all you need... a wood door you could trim but 2 and 1/2 inches is too much so get a new door

The only thing you can do is make the opening as wide as the door frame. Its easier to modify the opening then trying to trim a door. It's not a hard fix..... go for it!
