Why hasn't there been a documented wolf attack in the United States?

The reason I feel is this:

Those requirements for documentation negate all historical records!

As with rabid wolves, the biologist can say, "There are no `documented' cases of wild healthy wolves attacking humans." In order to be "documented" these unreasonable criteria must be met:

1. The wolf has to be killed, examined and found to be healthy.

2. It must be proven that the wolf was never kept in captivity in its entire life.

3. There must be eyewitnesses to the attack.

4. The person must die from their wounds (bites are generally not considered attacks according to the biologists).

That is a "documented" attack.

Wolves have one of the most demanding criteria in order to have a documented attack....and there is a reason. The governments of Canada and the U.S. wanted to change the perception of the wolf in the American people to gain funding for the conservation of the animals. Attacks on man does not help propaganda.

Do you feel this is fair criteria to be met?

Update:

Child Lifting: Whereas the number of predatory attacks in Europe has greatly abated in the last century, predatory attacks are reported sporadically in newspapers in India today. These attacks, on small children, are colloquially dubbed child lifting.

Child lifting can be traced back at least to the 19th century, but only in the last few years has it been investigated in the field by scientists. According to Rajpurohit (1999), wolves do not often attack children, but some attacks can be severe. In Bihar State sixty out of 80 children from 63 villages were attacked and killed by wolves from 1993 to 1995.

Another severe episode, reported by Jhala et al (1997), was when 76 small children from more than 50 villages in Uttar Pradesh, central north India, were attacked during seven months in 1996. Over fifty of the children died. The victims tended to be from the poorest class of people.

Update 2:

In a short answer...in kazakistan one particular American biologist strongly feels there has been over 1000 attacks on humans but because of the poor condition of the government it is not reported a lot. The government has though hired hundreds of professional hunters to try and increase the safety of their population.

In other countries where wolves are still in the wild they are usually very poor and underdeveloped countries.

To the little girl that said she didn't like me: In canada last year a 21 year old geology student was attacked and killed by a pair of wolves outside of a mine in the Yukon.

Hundreds of miles away the day after a man was attacked by a perfectly healthy adult wolf. It was killed to save the life of the miner and it was found that it was well fed, healthy with no disease and at a time where other food was plentiful. The animal did not have any injuries either. The wolf simply saw the miner as food as he walked back to camp.

Update 3:

sorry, he was 22: http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=379627

Attacks are rare...what bothers me is WHY CANNOT PEOPLE ACCEPT THAT THEY HAPPEN!!!???? I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT.

As for "who wrote this criteria" that would have to be your United States Government.....

The person must die from their attacks? where did you get

this from? Even if half of your face is ripped off and you

look like something out of a horror movie , its still not an

attack? Whoever wrote this criteria was smoking something.

There is no way to prove a wolf has never been kept in

captvity. Are there any other countrys that have documented wolf attacks on humans, that dont have ridiculous criteria to meet.

Crazy stuff Cam I think its about time the criteria gets updated.

I never said "Who wrote this criteria" I said where did you get

this from" as in do you have a link?

i dont know about all that. theres bean plenty like this one. and all this on this wed sight.

“NEW ROCKFORD, DAK, March 7 - The news has just reached here that a father and son, living several miles northeast of this city, were destroyed by wolves yesterday. The two unfortunate men started to a haystack some ten rods from the house to shovel a path around the stack when they were surrounded by wolves and literally eaten alive. The horror-stricken mother was standing at the window with a babe in her arms, a spectator to the terrible death of her husband and son, but was unable to aid them. After they had devoured every flesh from the bones of the men, the denizens of the forest attacked the house, but retired to the hills in a short time. Investigation found nothing but the bones of the husband and son. The family name was Olson. Wolves are more numerous and dangerous now than ever before known in North Dakota." Hippy Hunter.....

That's because wolves are "beautiful, majestic creatures...." and pit-bulls are just plain "ugly" dogs bred by MAN to fight. Its man's fault that they attack.... don't you KNOW that !!

Animal rights activists only care about "saving" the cute animals... the rest of the ugly animals can go to hell as far as the activists are concerned. Look at the whole Tuna fishing issue. Do the activists care about tuna? no. But God forbid you scoop up a dolphin or two..... then you have to change your methods !!

Its only when a "cute" and / or "intelligent" animal is put in harms way that the activists get their dander up.

Bottom line - WE (humans) are the top of the food chain and by Darwin's law (and dare I say it God's law) - that means WE (as humans) get to manipulate the other animal species to our benefit.... if the Wolves were the superior animal and thus in charge of the planet and the humans were still wild, do you honestly BELIEVE the fur balls would be having this type of debate? I highly doubt it.

I'm not in favor of hunting a species to extintion, but I would argue that a good amount of the "conservation" that humans attempt in nature is contrary to the entire idea of natural selection. If these other species cannot adapt, they perish. Sorry, but contrary to what the crazy, tree-hugging, activists whould have you believe, the world is a cold hard place of survival by adaptation.... always has been, always will be.

To think the human race can actually have an appreciable effect on the phenomenon (either positive or negative) of natural selection, gives the humans far too much credit for our own influence on the world of mother nature.

There's already a documented case in American Hunter. A couple of hunters and their dogs were attacked by wolves. They got out without getting eaten, but that makes your point also.

"by wolves" reported "by wujoo" for rant and insulting other members. Bye.

The wolves, like us, are but a bleap in the planetary design. That doesn't mean we should make their demise any faster.

The australians fought the same battle and now their "wolf" (not the dingo) is extinct and has been since 1918.

I don't want them to go away, but if they have no where to go but my backyard then so be it.

LOL "wolves are life" its ok we never liked you :D

its messed up that someone has to die to call it a attack.

i mean they could rip of my arms and legs and it isnt a attack..

but yet if i have a pit bull and it bites a kid and draws blood he has to be put down for "attacking" someone.....

    wtf?

yes wolves who attack humans in the first place are usually dieing from hunger and will attack the first live thng they see. but when they are healthy they wont dare be near a human so wolves dont hurt us unless they are unhealthy. and we kill them by the hundreds and theyve never killed us. i dont like you anymore cam.
