How do I get my child into Kindergarten if she misses the cut-off?
My four-year-old is finishing preschool this year, and is definitely ready to move on to Kindergarten. She is already reading small words, adding numbers, etc. She is at the head of her preschool class, and her teachers have repeatedly told me that she is highly advanced in almost every area. The problem is that my daughter doesn't turn 5 until September 5th, but the cut-off date in Utah is September 1st. I have spoken with the school district as well as the principal of the elementary, and was brushed off by both. I understand that there has to be a cut-off date, and I understand the implications if exceptions are made. But, surely, there has to be a way around this. My daughter is definitely ready; physically, academically, emotionally, and socially. If anyone out there has had a similar experience and has a solution to offer, I'd be extremely appreciative!

My parents' way around it was getting the parochial school system to bend their rules. I don't think the public school would have let me go, either, regardless of whether I tested at the top of my class. I hear you on those rules being silly. . . .
Do you have other options available besides your local school system? They aren't seeming very open to letting your daughter go, so I'd not try to push the issue with them any further. If you are able to afford and have another school available for at least a year, I'd see if they would at least let her get evaluated. You might find more sympathy there if she tests out well. You can always change schools once she's out of kindergarten if you want to (although I didn't), since then your school district will have to work with the situation.
Or maybe just threaten to do the above, and see if that helps your cause with the district any? It probably won't, but I guess you could try.

My sister was born one day after the cutoff date here (she was born October 1st, cutoff here was September 30th, but I think they've moved it up since then).
Here, there is a test you can take. If you get a high enough score, they let you into the grade. My sister was about at your daughter's level, and she passed it with flying colors, so I'm sure your daughter would pass. Ask the teachers about any tests that she could take or if they need a teacher to observe her for a day or for her teacher to submit an evaluation.
If they refuse to allow her into kindergarten, I would suggest that you either find another school where they will or home school her.

Kindergarten is far diverse than it became once you have been a infant. you'll be able to desire to have performed great commencing at age 4, however the straightforward 4/merely grew to become 5 365 days previous could have hassle dealing with at present's kindergarten. it rather is plenty greater academic now and it rather is rather the hot 1st grade. So i think of maximum youngsters do greater appropriate commencing at 5 a million/2 or 6. i do no longer think of it is so undesirable on your infant to could wait.

You could try homeschooling her this year for Kindergarten. Then, when she starts school next year, they will see that she is at a 1st grade level and can move her up a grade.

You can appeal the decision to the Superintendent and to the school board./ You can also either home school your daughter or send her to a private school.
