Why do people pick on Al Gore concerning Global Warming climate change, as if that will make it go away?
I don't get it. The more I look into it, the more I see Al Gore didn't invent Global Warming like some people would have you believe. Scientists were obviously talking about this well before the film 'An Inconvenient Truth'. I think Al Gore was just the first real famous person to make most of the world even aware of it or make them realize it is serious and something absolutely has to be done. That's it right? He's a politician, not a scientist. So who cares if there were some details that are disputed... the message is there right? Global Warming is this... this is how it is being accelerated, and this is why we have to find ways of slowing that acceleration down... Right? Do people feel bashing Gore somehow makes Global Warming go away or something, what gives??
What difference does it make what Al Gore does... isn't this problem greater than one man? If not, why don't people than criticize George Bush for Global Warming, seems he has more to do with it than Al Gore.
Glenn Beck calls The Great Global Warming Swindle "a great documentary"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=5B3EoiU3zKA&feature=rel...
If you haven't seen it, it is quite a piece of work... here's the beginning of it...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=xzSzItt6h-s
I actually saw this before I saw Al Gore's film so I was pretty biased by the time I did.
In fact, I was pretty much a big time skeptic until I saw something else, and then I began to understand what was going on... (along with other information that supported it, look at my last question if you want to understand better how I got to this point) Anyway... if you've see either of those films, especially the swindle film, than you owe it to yourself to see this... (part 0 of eleven parts) http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZYlbvJEZA_4 trust me, this is the best non-biased debate on global warming I've ever seen, and it effectively reduces the swindle film to being a very one-sided attack film. - (NOTE - you may want parental consent)
BTW - I appreciate your comments (skeptic or not)... I'm just mainly trying to learn why there are people who think this all hinges on Al Gore somehow.
Captain --- what do you mean “No such thing as Global Warming it's just a scare tactic” how do you know this? And still…
my question is about Al Gore, please re-read and answer that much at least instead of just making statement like that without backing it up somehow, if it is simply not true, I don’t think so many scientists would be saying it is. That doesn’t make sense to me at all.
Jleblanc… -- when did he admit lying about this? Would that kind of news be HUGE?? But again… Are you under the belief that Global Warming is only true or not true because of what Al Gore thinks? Why aren’t you looking to science for the answer instead of politics? Anyway… if you have evidence that Al Gore made this whole thing up and he’s the one who started it, etc. (sounds like what you’re implying), please provide that evidence… thanks.
JS - that's what I'm thinking as well. I won't say anything else... I just want to find out why skeptics feel this is all about Al Gore, seems so ridiculous. Either Global Warming is real or not, but I know Al Gore is not the first or only person to believe it is. A lot of people do. Most people do from all that I've read. This thing's got to be real, too many scientists say it is, way too many.

Al Gore didn't invent it. JS is right, the AGW skeptics are just running out of excuses and since they can't defeat Global Warming as truth, they instead try to equate Global Warming entirely to Al Gore and than try to defeat Al Gore for being human.
I still haven't seen any damning evidence showing that Al Gore "LIED" about anything.
In Science, and science related documentaries in general, it's easy for new information to replace earlier information, that's how science works. But even so... I think his film still stands up, even almost two years later.
But if you want to learn about Global Warming... just pick up an actual well respected peer-reviewed Science journal and stop being so naive to believe everything you hear (whether that be a politician like Al Gore, or James Inhoffe, or some junk science website/blog garbage)
[Edit]
aceking... the demonstration he used was not about how CO2 drives or lags anything... it was simply to show you the correlation of CO2 and temperature levels over the past 650,000 years as evidenced by the ice core data. What he was pointing out is that for the first time in this historic time line... CO2 and Temperature split apart, and quite drastically. CO2 is off the charts basically. His question therefore was... "What does this mean for temperature"? something to that effect. He's trying to get you to come to your own conclusions how this sudden spike in CO2 could be a bad sign, when considering Temps and CO2 levels in the past have shown to go up and down together (lag or not). And besides, it is a fact, CO2 can drive temperature when it is substantial enough... the event is known as 'Global Warming'. Get it!
We know this to be fact because it has happenened before (i.e. PEMT - Paleo-Eocene Thermal Maximum 55 mil year ago caused by extreme and extensive vocanic activities).
Here's an unlikely source... (and if this isn't disturbing enough for you to show you that this isn't just some Al Gore tree-hugger show, nothing is)
Below... even the oil companies know of the PETM and likewise acknowlege Global Warming, now and then, and yet press on to drill anyway, how uncanny)...
Petroleum News Vol. 10, No. 44
"Finding the thermal maximum. Towards the bottom of the well the team found what is called the Paleo-Eocene thermal maximum, or PETM, a known high point in temperature trends about 55 million years ago. That’s the point at which the surface of Arctic Ocean appears to have attained temperatures of about 68 F, showing that the whole of the Earth including the North Pole became warm at that time." ... "Many scientists believe that the rapid rise in temperatures in the PETM is directly analogous to modern global warming trends. So, understanding the response of the planet to that PETM warming may shed light on the potential impact of global warming" pp 15

Source(s): Below, evidence of earlier global warming (this one lasting 20,000 years and one which rocked ecosystems world-wide... we can thank the immergance of mammals as dominant life forms because of this major event. Our earliest mammalian ancestors very well could date back to the PETM global warming event. That's a little ironic as it is eerie. Sorry I had to do it that way, yahoo answers blocks me from posting that particular link directly - which is very odd I must say. - Anonymous1 decade ago
I think you already know, based on your very gutsy post, but obviously this is scapegoating. Al didn't cause this, didn't invent it, is in no way responsible. That makes him a perfect target for the angst of people who want a target, and care about little else. I can't help suspecting the real imbeciles heard about Global Warming for the first time from Al Gore, but that's really their problem not mine. The amount of time they spend talking about him amazes me, because I'm a Conservative. I wonder what they would do if they ever got wind of all the other stuff that's going on in the world? How many Al Gores would they need to deal with that? I guess the neocons would rather bash away at a stationary target than eat lunch or have sex. I say, Go For It!

Regardless of Al Gore with his disputed actions and motives man definitely influences climate change. Strangely enough GW many indeed usher in the next ice age if the ocean currents are halted do to a saline imbalance.
Whatever the details the fact is man is a meddlesome creature when it comes to technology. Couple this with certain rampant capitalistic incentives one can easily see how things have gotten out of control.
The truth of the matter is people pick on Al Gore for multiple reasons, including party affiliation, religious ideology, believing his character to be disreputable, or are just being like ostriches hoping that by sticking their heads far enough into the proverbial sands of ignorance that all will work out on its own.
But my most prominent theory as that this whole "debate" and attack on Gore has more do to with Fossil Fuel interests and there attack dogs.
Call me a conspiracy theorist but I believe some of them are working this section and influencing vulnerable minds. IMO YA has more than its share of the mob mentality.
But you are right no matter what their motives may be for attacking Gore Climate Change is not going to be easily stopped. And it certainly won't be done via denial.
Thanks for the question it was much needed.

Al will not comment on why he used footage in his movie that is not even real. In fact, you can see much of the same footage in the movie "The day After Tomorrow". Al Gore found a way to make money by using scare tactics. These environmental scare tactics have been used for years. In fact. We should all be dead right now because of the giant hole in the Ozone layer. Come on people. There was global warming and cooling a long time before we had industry. I'm not saying that we cannot accelerate it. But I am saying someone is making money off of this scare tactic and it isn't you or I.

It shows that political skills and marketing are more important than scientific validity. Different points of view were popular in different countries. While some European scientists were interested in global warming in the 1970's, it would be a bad career move for a US scientist to investigate global warming while his/her colleagues were selling the benefits to humanity of predicting the coming ice age. It's hard to get people excited about global warming and coming ice ages at the same time - they seem kind of contradictory.

It is simple, attack the messenger.
The science supporting GW is strong and simple Co2 is a greenhouse gas, we are producing billions of tons of Co2 a year and have been for 100 years. Most of the deniers have even stopped the silly argument that Co2 isn't a greenhouse gas.
The argument that the world is to big and we couldn't effect it is rubbish. Yes there are natural cycles and processes but we are a new addition to the the system, adding to those natural processes. GW isn't going to cause 'the world' any problem it has seen the seas rise and fall 100s of feet, we are another matter many of the worlds major cities are either coastal on on large rivers sea rise of only 1-2 feet will cost them 100 of billions of dollars, London and New York alone are the hubs of the worlds economy.

Most of you people on here sound crazy. It doesnt matter how global warming started its the point thats its happening. The goverment is trying to push it aside in public but I'm sure they are scared sh*tless. Ice lands ,as of the north and south pole, are melting because its getting warmer there. So when that ice melts everything around it will flood intil the whole world is underwater and anyone who survives will die of starvation. Then the water will freeze and become frozen just like the ICE AGE we had millions of years ago after this same thing was proven to happen to dinosaurs. Read on it and you'll know how we'll all be extinct.

EVEN IF 9 PEOPLE OUT OF 10 AGREE WITH AL GORE ON GLOBAL WARMING IT STILL WON'T TURN LIES INTO TRUTH . THERE USE TO BE ATIME WHEN MORE THAN 9 PEOPLE OUT OF 10 BELIEVED THE WORLD WAS FLAT .WAS IT?? THE WHOLE TRUTH . AL GORE IS A PROFESSIONAL SCAM ARTIST .

Because Al Gore is the most visible and prominent about it.
- Anonymous1 decade ago
Because Al Gore found a way to make people gullable enough to push his agenda and make money on it. Climate change may be real but man has NO effects on it what so ever and he uses bad science and false statement to propegate the myth that is why.
It is the same reason people blame G W Bush for the economy and people losing their houses or jobs.
