How scenic is the Vermonter train route?

I'm thinking about going up to Burlington from New York City for a weekend. I like train travel because the tracks often go through the wilderness, but on this route it looks like the tracks are pretty close to I-91 a lot of the way. If I go, will I be looking at gas station and fast food signs, or gorgeous scenery?

Once you get north of Springfield, it's very scenic as you travel alongside the Connecticut River; I think you cross it twice. There are no large towns above there so it's very scenic. The last time I took it (to Montpelier) there was also a narrator once you crossed into Vermont. There are also very few passengers for the last few hours, and it's at night. The "premium" food package they sell is much better than what they sell from the regular menu in the snack car.

There's also the Ethan Allen train that runs through upstate NY.
