I think the problem is that the ump never actually called time, although he should have. That's what the SF announcers were saying. If he didn't call it, then it is a balk. Technically, the call is right. But he should have granted time. An ump will never change a call like that, and shouldn't, even though he was being a complete jerk (in my opinion).

The real stinker is that this "balk" looks like the deciding run in the game. An umpire should NEVER be the difference in the win/loss column.

If you watch the replay, Lincecum stops his delivery before the umpire moves his hands up. Lincecum stopped because Molina stood up calling for time...but Molina called for time after Lincecum was moving. By the time the umpire puts his hands up, Lincecum is done moving and it's a balk. The pitcher and catcher cannot assume time will be called instantly and the pitcher should know better than to start his delivery and not complete it. He'd have been better off putting a fastball in the ump's nuts. It was the proper call and sloppy baseball by Molina and Lincecum.

I watched the game. I think the umpires should just tell who wins the game at the beginning of the game. And just make the call who wins so they can be the "Stars" of the game. The big screens in the stadium can just put the pictures of the umpires on the screen and they can tell people who they want to win. We dont need basball.... we need umpire fans. I'm sure that would fill the seats. Gary Darling is man.

  • It shouldnt have been called a balk. He clearly called for time. I hate when calls like that decide the ending of a game.

I answered this in another question -- it is a balk.

The proper mechanic when calling a balk when a pitch is not delivered is to call Time.

Darling got it right -- it was a start and stop balk.

I watched the game...the ump DID call time. he raised his arms to call time then QUICKLY called the balk. this is one of the worst calls i've ever seen. Let the players decide the game. this ump should be fired IMMEDIATELY.
