I am looking for the best SUV for 3 kids under 5 yr.?

I am in search of the best SUV (not a mini-van fan) for a family of 5. Three kids are under 5 yrs old so we have two boosters and a car seat. We dont want a large SUV (were thinking sequoia at one point) Safety is a priority. I currently have all 3 in the 2nd row. its definately a pain w them fighting and all but Im not sure how safe the 3rd rows are. We test drove a Volvo xc90 (liked the ride), GMC Acadia (did not like) ..

Has anyone been in this predicament or suggestions?

Thanks!

I would have to disagree with the person who said a GMC Envoy. I own one, I can honestly say it is great SUV, but I barely get 14MPG on MidGrade Highway Miles. I like the car, but I hate the economical factor. The Volvo is a very nice truck, the only problem I would worry about is reliability. They are good for the first couple of years, but after time, it becomes a hassle to own one of them. Here is a list of the years which I think you should take a look at:

    1) Toyota Highlander Hybrid- Safe, manages up to 32MPG

    2) Ford Freestyle- One of the safest trucks on the road.

    3) BMW X5- They actually are very reliable and extremely sporty, not to mention some of the best safety ratings on the market.

    4) Saab 9-7x- It is the GMC Envoy's counterpart, it just has a more economical engine and better safety ratings

    5) Lexus GX470- About the same as a Toyota 4Runner, just better looking and better material quality. Very reliable!!

    6) Acura MDX- Good Price, Reliable, Safe, Great Navigation System

7)Subaru Tribeca- SAFE, Built EXTREMELY Well.

These are the best out there, in no specific order.

Volvo xc90!!! or BMW X5. look at those 2, maybe check out the new Acura RDX if you wanna go that high. But definately if your looking at safety take a look at those 3. Ask about all the safety features and you can search the internet for safety ratings if you want. just type in google something like "volvo xc90 crash test results" and you'll get it. I would go with either the volvo or the BMW x5 though, can't beat volvo and BMW for safety. good luck!

    - we had 2 volvos, both got into an accident. One had just a squashed bumper when the car that hit it had a hood totally crumpled. The most recent accident was our Volvo s60 T5. It was rear ended at a complete stop at 65-70mph by a pick up truck. The outside crumpled of couse, but from the inside you couldn't even tell it had been wrecked. Interior was flawless, if safety is your absolute top pick, go volvo.

You may also want to try a Dodge Durango, Chrysler Aspen, or Dodge Journey (a mid sized crossover). All three have available third row seating and 5 Star Crash Test Ratings. The Journey definitely gets better fuel mileage than the two larger SUV's.

Subaru Tribeca, if you can find one.

    Ford Taurus X

    GMC Envoy

Really, for space efficiency your best bet is a minivan. I know what you said, but there it is.

Do you really need a SUV? Do you ever go offroad? I had a Caravan for years and it gave great service - the convenience of all that room is quite something. I switched to a Subaru Forester. There are many days when I miss all that space, but I never find myself thanking the all-wheel drive. I never need it.

And the mileage stinks. At $3.45/gal, that's something to think very hard about.

Hey, look at the Mazda5. I had no idea it had that many seats in it. They get good mileage for the space they offer.

I think you should get over your aversion to minivans. They are easier to park, get better gas mileage, handle better, and are safer in anything other than a head-on collision with a big SUV. (Can you guarantee that's the kind of accident you'll have?)

If you MUST have an SUV, check and see if they are selling the Chevrolet Yukon Hybrid in your region. They are being made in limited numbers, but they get the same mileage in the city as a four-cylinder Toyota Camry, seat 7, and can pull a 6,200 pound trailer.

    Good luck and good motoring!
