Should spanking be legal or illegal?

Spanking your child is neither legal or non-legal...I think if a kid is really acting up, a smack here or there is not going to kill them but WILL re-inforce them.

My mom came after me and my brother with a wooden spoon..it did us both good. Really.

The better question is why did these kids' parents allow that to go on for so many years? Honestly, 8 and especially 12 is too old for spanking, and if you actually try to use spanking on a kid that old, it's likely just going to backfire and make them more aggressive and rebellious. The parents should have nipped that behavior in the bud when the kids were toddlers. I think if you are firm and consistent with discipline from the start, you shouldn't have to do much spanking in the first place. It should be the last resort and only when a child is too young to understand reason. So to answer your question, no, I don't think it should be illegal, but I don't think it's going to help in the situation you described. Again, the parents unfortunately let the situation spiral out of control and they need professional help.

But spanking, yes. It should be legal. If you don't show your children any discipline, they'll grow up on the rough side thinking they can do whatever they want. In real life, no one's going to take that crap from em if they have no respect for others as well as themselves. Children need discipline, true. But they don't need abuse. That's where a lot of people have a problem at drawing the line at. Discipline vs. Abuse. Sad stories they are. But definately a spanking would be it. I don't really spank children much because they know I don't play the games, but it does do help.

I just don't understand why some parents are afraid to spank their children. It won't ruin them for the rest of their lives, but it WILL ruin their reason to misbehave. :P

I think it is insanity to not be able to give your children a correctly administered spanking...States that have enacted laws against spanking have gone OVER the top as parents should be able to discipline their children without the State interfering. A correct spanking is on the behind...and we are not talking about a beating. I think most parents are in agreement about what a correct spanking is and few enjoy giving one...it is only done when really needed. States need to get out of people's lives

i think that it should be legal. its stupid not to spank kids. at that age, grounding alone wont do anything for them or make them change. I got them up until I was like 10 years old and it changed me. They shouldnt be beating the crap out of their mother. I totally agree with you.

i agree! i got them when i was a kid, and i would never in a million years act that way! if i did i wouldnt be able to sit for a week! we also got swats in school, which i think they need to bring back! beating no! but a good old fashion butt spanking is what my kids would get, if they acted that way!

I believe in spanking...if you do it right you don't have to do it a lot...I would never tolerate my daughter hitting me...I tackled her once for doing that...she was 11 at the time...she got the message...

I agree, don't beat the poor kids but you're harming them more by teaching them that they can get away with breaking rules without punishment---they'll end-up in jail!

yes they need it because some kids need that i know it sucks but i bet they wont do what they did again with out thinking...

it quite is criminal to spank your baby in all states which contains California. it quite is basically unlawful while it rises to the point of abuse or if it quite is somebody different than the childs discern.
