"Dark" is a term used in physics for something we do not understand. in other words "dark matter" would simply be some kind of mass we can not dectect. although there may be ways of detecting dark matter with gravity. We see that the galaxy has too little mass for it to hold itself together so as a theory we say "well then this must must mean that there is some mass out there that we can not detect" hence "Dark matter". If we ever did detect this missing mass we would surely give it a better name. so things like "dark matter" or "dark energy" are just terms of things we brush under the rug that we do not understand. typically there will be evidence sugessting its existance just no direct findings. one theory on dark matter could be that it is just black holes. We do know much about our universe. but we are learning.

It is Dark matter because we can't see it, we can only see the effects of it. Dark matter makes up alot of the known of the universe, the rest is anti-matter and matter, which is small in quantity. We believe it exists because we see effects from it like gravity. It also pieces together those missing numbers in some equations, like why are galaxies moving so fast if matter isn't doing it?

Nobody really knows, the term is used to describe "whatever it is" that makes our universe behave like it shouldn't be if everything was normal matter

For example, the expansion of the universe is acceleration, it would appear that most of the matter in the universe would have to be composed of something that gravity doesn't affect the same way for this to be possible

We don't know what dark matter is yet. We know about it because we can observe its effects on other objects, but we cannot see it directly. So we call it "Dark matter". It's just a shorter way of saying "that stuff we know is there but can't see".

we see places in teh universe where there is way more gravity than teh mass we see can generate. we can't see any matter exerting teh gravity. so we call it dark matter. we dont know what it is.
