There is a course you can take either online or in an actual class setting. It is classified as Event Management and several online institutions offer the course. I live in New York and intend on Taking the course at NYU. Go online and search for Event Mangement Training.......

I would assume a finance class would be beneficial. Once you sort that out you can determine logistical concerns for your events. If you plan on having any sort of extensive employee base, then basic business classes at a community college or similar would be good as well. The best "class" you could take, I assume, would be to study established event planning businesses and their methodologies.

I think it's important to look at the skills required of an "event planner" to determine possible courses of study in this field. A few include:
* Verbal and written communications
* Organization and time management
* Budget management
* Staff management
* Marketing and public relations
You also need to develop an expertise in a variety of areas, including venue selection, catering, production, entertainment, gifts, transportation, lodging, conference services and more.
As it relates to educational programs, I believe successful "event planners" come from a variety of fields and educational backgrounds. Generally speaking, I do believe that several programs of study will prepare you for success, including marketing, public relations, business administration and hospitality management. And, although there are a range of certificate programs, it is best to pursue a bachelor's degree in a field of study that interests you.
I recognize that a lot of people are interested in event planning careers. Check out some of the articles and blog entries on my site on About.com. Thanks!
